Using high volume keywords to boost impressions. Yay or nay?

Hi,

I'm in a little bit of a pickle.
It seems like the keyword I am trying to target doesn't get much traffic, and even if it does, there's not many conversions going on there. So, what I've been doing lately is checking out Google Trends and then using those search terms as my keywords.

As you might have guessed, this increases the impressions of the ads and also gets me a good amount of clicks. If my intended keywords didn't have a low search volume, I wouldn't need to do this. But anyway, this "methodology" of mine sometimes works and most times doesn't because of Quality Score.

Is there any advice I can get on how I could increase my impressions and clicks without having to target absolute garbage that is not even related to my landing page?

Hi YourName,

The key to getting more impressions and clicks is to expand your keyword list with extremely relevant long tail keywords, improve you Quality Scores by writing compelling ad text, and then raise your bids to get you ads in top position for for maximum clicks.

A great tool to use to expand you keyword list can be found in the AdWords Editor. It's called the Keyword Opportunities Tool

Next, try the Display Network. Create separate campaigns for each of the following targeting methods: keywords, interest categories, topics, placements, and remarketing.

Use the Auction Insights report to analyse your bidding strategy in the auctions, ad the Search Terms report for honing your targeting methods.

Thanks dburk, but what if the search terms are not even being searched as much?

Hi Yourname,

The reason they are called longtail keywords is because there are a lot of keywords that make up the longtail. So while each keyword individually has a small amount of search volume, when you put together a list of several thousand longtail keywords the total volume can often exceed the short head keywords.
