I wondered what the general consensus was on where to place social media buttons, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Reddit etc?

Just above main content underneath heading
At the bottom of the page underneath main content
Floating to the left
floating to the right
fixed in the left column
fixed in the right column
at the very top of the page

I'll be interested to know what you guys think
#buttons #media #social

I post them at the top of the article and the bottom, for different reasons.

Placing them at the top, really helps my bounce rate, as the visitor sees that lots have people have enjoyed the article and will likely read on.

Then when they get to the bottom, they are reminded that they have a chance to share the article, like others have done.

I dont like floating ones though for some reason.

The floating ones are okay, but I now believe people will not bother clicking on them. People are more likely to click on something if it directly in their eyes view. Something got me thinking by what you said, the ones I have on my site at the moment don't display how many "likes" the article has received, there is only the social media icons.I have different ones on my forum and block, they do show how many likes the forum or blog post has had

I've never understood why people think someone is going to like the content before they've even seen the content.

Reminds me of how Google tried to add G+ to their ads, If you haven't clicked the ad, it's a BS G+ since you have no idea what it's about, same goes for content.

Thats why i think it is important to have at the top and bottom. The top one lets people know that its actually worth reading. Its the same reason why Coca Cola etc use indian companies to buy likes on their websites. People are more likely to read/buy, if they see that other people have.

On Yukon's comment, the placement of social media buttons on the top may be based from 'standard' location. I noticed a lot of sites have their social media buttons on top of the article (usually just below the title). I guess when you do split testing, it is more effective to have the buttons on top of the content for easier access or more user-friendly navigation?

I would also have to agree that it is safe to just put the buttons on top then at the bottom part of the content.

Best of all, you can do split tests and check which is effective for you

Place wherever you want but that should attract or call the visitors to press those buttons. That should be visible enough for the visitors.
