In the past, it used to be that people would put keywords in their site title, for example:

Books.com | Paperback, hardback, e-books

However, it seems that less and less websites are doing this now and the top ranking sites in Google will simply have the page title up the top and the website name, for example:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl | Books.com

Is the second example the best way to go about SEO these days? In some cases, it seems example one is now just being used on the homepage by many websites.

Thanks for your time!

I'd be looking to create a unique title for each page of the site. If your 2nd example is relevant to that specific page, then it would work well. Equally, the first example might be appropriate for your homepage.

Make your title according to the page. Example 1 is generic and if you use it across all the pages, your site would not rank higher due to duplicate title tag. Also, if you are using titles that are irrelevant to the page, it won't do you any good.
