Hey, which is better, having your Adwords ads at the very top of the page, or to the right?

I've been in IM so long now that I forgot which I used to click on first before I got into this biz

In my experience top is better. It's directly in the line of site and the most obvious part of the page your visitors will look at. I find it's a little easier to integrate a right hand bar into a site though.

    Hi,

My impression is that most people are getting pretty good at filtering out adverts on the sides. Even at the top, alot of people will tend to lock straight onto the content below first.

The one that seems to work still is having the ads appear halfway through the text. Works as a natural paragraph break too.

Overall though, in my opinion, banners ads just don't work as well as they used to. People are just blanking them out.

    Good luck. Sam

At the very top is best. My theory is that your ad looks more like a SERP and since, as we learned in another thread, more than half the people click on the first listing (maybe out of impulse), you can get some very high CTRs. 15, 20 even 30% or more can be achieved. However, will your conversions be as good? First place is not always desirable so keep an eye on that.

My data does not support what VallyArch says about right-hand side filtering. You can get decent CTRs and conversions in those positions. You have to test for yourself.

By the way, ads are not not always shown at the top of SERPs. You need a CTR threshold as well as a CPC threshold. You sometimes see no advertisers reaching them and all appear on the right side.

It varies from niche to niche.

The only thing you can do is setup a split-test that will take you 2 days to track and see the results, simple.
