Purchased Some Expired Domains

I bought some expired domains that revolve around my main site's niche that have decent backlink profiles. I have a few questions on using these domains.

I was looking at the sites and some of them have decent PR links pointing at internal pages. How do you handle this to retain those incoming links? Do you try to rebuild the same pages that have links pointing at them, or do do just do a 301 redirect to the homepage? I really don't know much about using a 301 redirect.

Also if a person wanted to wait awhile before building out one of these domains could I just 301 redirect the site to my main site temporarily until I'm ready to build it out? Or would it be better to just wait until I have the site build out then link to my main site?

      I would not use that. If I was Google and I wanted to create a footprint to look for possible private networks, that is one footprint I would look for.

      Most 'real' sites do not create a blanket 301 redirect of all their 404 pages to their homepage.

      I would either do an individual redirect of the pages to a relevant page or the homepage, or I would recreate the old pages.

        If this is for use of a private network, i'd only really buy domains with most of the links going to the root domain. Makes life easier.

          I'd avoid "stealing" the content from, say the web archive of the site as it was, but spend some time and recreate the page with similar content.

          In my experience, it takes a little while for a neglected page to lose its juice, so you can sit on it for a bit, but I wouldn't wait too long. At least get some content on there, even if you're not linking to anywhere yet. Or better yet, think about linking to an "authority site" in the meantime, like wikipedia or some other authority in your niche.

          Take some time and build out some backlinks to the sites on your network. I know the trend is to just throw up a simple wordpress theme and a link, and then let it right, but spending a little time to make those sites look unique is worth it in the long run.

          You might consider building out one of the internal pages to keep those links, and just linking to your money site. For instance, if there are some serious links pointing to yoursite.com/page, build that page up with some content and throw out a link to your site.

        I agree with this.

        I would re-create the pages that have PR or that I see as valuable pages and manually re-direct the rest.

        Lol, we'll never agree on the subject of sitewide redirects for 404s. It's all good.

        I'll say this, I never have 404s on my sites, even If for some odd reason a broken link did exist. I think we both agree Google will never rank a 404 page, so that's one more reason to avoid them like the plague.

        IMO 404 pages should have never been invented, it's the worst user experience on the net. I would rather be redirected back to the Home page (or whatever main page) than look at a 404 page telling me I'm lost (that's the best they can do?).

        Note there's no reason for a silly plugin. It's like 3-4 lines of code to get the job done & on autopilot for all of eternity.

        BTW, I'm talking about real sites, not some link scheme.

        It's also not uncommon for a domain to be redirected to another domain.

    How many internal pages are we talking here? I tend to just 301 back to the homepage as it makes life a lot simpler although with only a handful of domains it is probably more feasible time-wise to recreate some of those pages. But remember than each of those pages will require some content so if there are a lot, it could end up costing you.

    As for when you should build the site out - I'd at least get a few pages up whether it's in the default Wordpress theme or not (tip: don't use Wordpress all the time - there are more non-Wordpress sites on the internet than there are Wordpress ones!).

    Thanks for the answers. I have also purchased some domains and wanted to put the content back from archive but decided to write my new content but I made the same pages so that I don't lose the links. I will keep on checking this post.
