Backlinks - How Do You Get Them???

This may sound dumb, stupid, etc., but exactly how do you get backlinks?

The reason for asking is that the word is that articles no longer work, guest blog posting doesn't work, blog comments don't work, reciprocal links do not work, paid links are a no-no, etc.

It appears that the only links that really work are the links that other webmasters post promoting your site / web page.

It seems to me that simply emailing a webmaster and asking for a backlink would not work because there is nothing in it for the webmaster.

So, just exactly do you get backlinks?

Thanks.

Not sure what that means. But I have wrestled with this question also. I have been told by one that they advocate buying high PR links. others have said to buy high PR domains and do your own links.

Where in hell can you get such links if you don't buy them or create your own by buying the domains?

What's the meaning of your post. He asked for a backlinks source tip to find more cool ways to get backlinks... Forget about this...

Guest blogging is the best way to do this (don't forget about the same NICHE, HIGH PR and HIGH Authority!)...
Article and Forum marketing should work well if you can write unique articles.. and of course post on RELATED forums...
Social Bookmarking backlinks are a great way to boost your SERP. Just do NOT spam and use DIFFERENT keywords for anchor text's!

The problem is that, every day a lot more people get in this internet marketing. And it becomes harder to get really quality backlinks because of the increasing number of competitors. But always try to get backlinks from high ranking sites, it will affect really a lot.

There are tons of articles and a lot of articles about similar subjects. Just different type of writing. In order your article to rank well, it should not have a lot of competitors.
Blog commenting may work for some time. But you will always have to submit. Because after you comment, another comments than another and it continues this way. Than you comment may go on back pages where it will not be seen. And it affects your links.
It's becoming harder to get quality backlinks, but always we have to be ssearch and find solutions. This is competition, if you stop than you will leave the competition.

    • articles no longer work (junk)
    • guest blog posting doesn't work (wrong)
    • blog comments don't work (wrong)
    • reciprocal links do not work (wrong)
    • paid links are a no-no (still works)

This probably isn't what you want to hear but I get a lot of links from traffic building the links for me. The way I do that is by building sites that solve problems. Regardless of the niche there will always be traffic that is new to the niche, that gets you a lot of traffic asking the same questions over & over... It works in stages, the guy that was new to the niche last month, tries to give advice (links) to the guy that's new to the same niche today. The cycle continuously repeats... Be the go to guy/site for a niche & traffic will help build some links.

I still build some links on my own for optimizing things, but that's more of a link supplement than straight out building 100% of the links myself.

There's a few quality sites that I've emailed same niche webmasters asking for a link, they don't usually ask me to link back to them. I do also have some reciprocal links that deliver targeted traffic, I wouldn't ever trade those links for Googles SEO opinion. Direct targeted traffic is golden.

I also have a few smaller sub-niche feeder sites that I use to advertise my main money sites. Example, If your money site sells lawnmower parts, then build out a few smaller feeder sites with DIY tips for lawnmowers (schematics, repair tips, etc...), then advertise the money site on the small feeder sites. Repeat... That gets you both direct targeted traffic + SEO (relevant links).

The best way is to have nothing but quality content on your website. Create totally linkworthy content and let social media do the work for you. It takes time to establish yourself as an authority, but once you do, everything you create will get linked to.

So yes, you have to create valuable content. But the even harder part is to establish yourself as an authority in your field.

It's not a stupid question. I'm happy to do the on-page SEO which I find to be fairly easy and straightforward. Well, it should be, since I've been in this profession (webdev / sitebuilder / all around web monkey) for more than a decade... But link building is hard, so very hard.

I'd trust Yukon's post on this. I'm also in the impression that everything you listed still works, but not if you're using it for link spamming.

You can definitely still build your own links effectively. Its helpful to build a tier of sites below your money site though so that you can build links to that buffer. If anything you didn't want to happen happens then you can go to your handy dandy spreadsheet of buffer sites and make heads or tails of where the problem is. Then pull the link from the offending 2nd tier site.

    Thanks All!

The general consensus appears to be that the word on the internet is wrong. Backlink building methods listed in the op, as well as other methods that we can control, still work as long as we provide informative and helpful info.

But, then again, who is to say that the info that we provide is informative and helpful? Google can not distinguish between good and bad content/info.

If Articles no longer work, write a article for only one article site with new and informative content and promote them.
Guest blog posting work well, you need to be more intelligent to use this techniques, so Google not find out that you are doing it for promoting purpose only.

Blog comments don't work - it works, try to get back links on name instead of keyword. Use Blogging and forums are best for back links, You just need to use some tricks and forum will give you traffic as well. And back links from high pr matter most.

Obviously I'm a fan of the private blog network approach but I would never solely rely on it.

So I also do some of the following:

    - blog comments on highly relevant and recent posts. I don't look for old posts with PR, I got for new posts that people are actually reading. This can also bring good traffic if the blogs you comment on are popular. I only ever use a name (often a pen name) for the links so don't go putting keywords in the name field.

    - infographics. You can find cheap (but good) infographic creation services in the Warriors for Hire section and then submit them to both infographic sites and do blogger outreach with them.

    - guest blogging. The trick here is to find blogs that aren't just setup for guest blogging purposes but rather real blogs with real readers.

    - web 2.0 sites. For what you pay for someone to create these, they are useful to even out anchor text ratios.

    - well placed reciprocal links can still be effective but the key is quality and relevance, not quantity.

    - article submission. Never mass submissions but rather unique articles. Again, it's cheap to hire someone to do this and it can help make a natural anchor text profile.

    - press release submission. If used correctly then they can also bring traffic.

As a side note, I don't care if a link is nofollow or not. Many blog comments, web 2.0 links and press release links will be nofollow but so what?

This is the most effective way to get quality backlinks. Try to search google for the keywords you would like to rank, gather the top ten results. Then analyze the backlinks of these sites, if you can also get links from all the sites linking to them, that would be excellent!

try working out with the forum signatures as this will provide you genuie and strong back link, yes most of them may be do follow but it will work on your favor .. you can also depend on the signatures from yahoo answers. Rest article submission is not dead matt cutts never mentioned in a video that article submission is dead he states.... like if you have 100 articles and on each of the articles you have put on 10 or more links than that should be avoided.

I use social more than anything noways. Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, and Tumblr are the ones that I focus on the most. Create a post on all of these for every article you write and be sure to include hashtags to reach a larger audience.

Blogs and forums are another place I like to hang out. Most communities will let you have a link directly back to your website from every post, or have a link in your profile which links back. Even if it's not a direct link from every post to your site, each post will create buzz for your profile page that will then carry over to your site.

I also use bookmarking sites like Reddit, Digg, Stumbleupon, etc which also work nicely for easy traffic and backlinks.

All of these methods are awesome because people will start clicking in on day one to help you get started, while generating a lot of backlinks at the same time. Make sure to focus on quality posts and interacting with the community and you'll be up and running in no time.

As long as backlinks are part of the ranking equation in Google, then it still works only that you need to focus more on building quality links. I disagree on what you've said that guest posting no longer works. It does! In fact, I have invested a lot of my time in working on guest posts. But like I said, this will only work if you have good, unique content to share. I suggest you only submit your content to good, high PR or authority sites.

Backlinks are very easy to get. Simply produce fantastic content, promote it in the beginning if needed and eventually people will discover its existence and it will take off from there.

Granted, you can get backlinks by guest posting, forum posts, etc, but that's just a pain and sometimes an uphill battle and will have absolutely no impact in the SERPs if your site is lame.

Keep in mind that websites should be built for people, not search engines. Companies like Google strive by this philosophy. Without being biased, evaluate your site thoroughly and carefully to make sure it stands out from others and if it truly does, it will generate much success.

In fact, some of the link building techniques you have mentioned still work. And work pretty well.

For example, guest blogging. Do you know that, for instance, Forbes.com (PR8) accepts guest posts? So if you submit your post there (or to ANY other [high-quality and relevant] website/blog) and that will meets their quality guidelines, will it be bad for your site? Will your site be penalized? I doubt that...

So guest blogging works. And it will help you not only get some link juice, but also drive hordes of referral traffic to your site.

Also, blog commenting can be useful. If you lease good, informative, meaningful comment, and the link in your post will be relevant to the topic of that post, you can also earn some targeted traffic for your site.

There are some other interesting (and not hackneyed) ways to get links. Check out this post: 4 Outside-the-Box Link Building Tactics

As for other link building techniques you have mentioned (paid links, spammy commenting, reciprocal links, etc.), yes, they should be avoided by all means.

I use BL checkers on my competition and check frequently the new links they receive. I then see if I can post a comment or receive a similar link that they did. Often being proactive on competitors links and letting them do the hard work enables you to piggy back off of their success.
