How to check if a website link is going to have a negative impact

I want to know which tools can I use to check if a website link is going to have a negative impact on my site? Are there any online tools you can use, free or paid, than can do that?

I ask because I hear there are some sites where getting links from them could actually have a negative impact.

Some of my sites were badly effected by recent Google updates.

Thanks.

If you want to manually check just look at metrics such as DA, PR, OBLs, Alexa Rank, does it have sitewides in Google, content, etc. It is pretty easy to spot a crappy site if you know what to look for.

If you want to get more robust check out: Link Detox - Risk Management for your Toxic Links.

Firstly I would say that there is no 100% foolproof way to tell whether or not a link from a particular site will have a negative impact.

My honest advice would be to steer clear of anything automated and steer clear of links being sold via forums like WF.

I've heard ok things about the tool recommended above but it can only deal with links already to you site, it cannot tell you anything about the links you might be about the build.

      Thanks to both of you.

@Steve, is Link Detox - Risk Management for your Toxic Links definitely for existing links that you have, no for new possible links that you are prospecting for?

I badly want a system that can tell me if a "prospective" link is going to be toxic. I am looking to manage 3 sites, in 3 countries, and I really don't want any bad links this time.

I'm fairly sure it is just for existing links.

I think you just have to use common sense some of the time when building new links.

Do you know what links caused you to get penalties last time?

Hi Steve, No. I don't know.

I used to pay various people to help me build links. I did well out of it for a few years, where most of my sites ranked at the top of Google searches. I did get the links removed "disavow", but by then I had already decided to start a new venture.

I am no "expert" but I somehow have enough knowledge to "get by" and do OK.

With this is new project, it's a global product/service, so I am very hands on. It will be so much together to rank. However, I have employed full time content writers and designers. We will have wait and see.

I know you are right. It is about common sense. However, as you know link building can often be a boring and tedious process, so it would have been great help to have a tool that can certify a risk on a domain/link. I will contact the guys on that site and see find out more about their product.

          Thanks.

            ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you actually NEED to check, man, you people are too far gone....

But then, I do agree that the vast majority of you don't seem to know
a good link from a hole in the ground...you can't fix stupid.

I have no idea what "ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" means...

I am not hip and cool and don't know what every abbreviation means. I am not that old.

Also I did say, I am NOT SEO an expert.

What's the benefit of being insulting!

I used to remember years ago, for some people, the only way to feel good about themselves was to put someone else down. If it will help you, then you can insult me again and again. I am happy to help.

I just googled it...is it Rolling On The Floor Crying?

              Good one.

Hmmm. I think that would be ROTFC...

No matter. Yukon is just being kind. I cannot believe anyone would need
anything to tell them whether a page they wish to put a link on will
hurt. If you have to ask...

Just more proof people keep looking under the same rocks. Stop
looking under the same rocks, no problem.

Or, start learning to find something else before looking under the same
                rocks as everyone else.

The day I (or anyone else) needs something to tell them to not put
a link somewhere, is the day we all have lost our marbles.

Yes, it is for your existing link profile. Same metrics should apply when aquiring links also.

Other than looking at the backlink site (spammy looking) the backlink sources for the site/page your wanting to get a backlink on would tell a lot about a site.
