profiles on SB with karma system question

I posted a variation of this question in the main WF but either I failed to word it correctly or the time of day that I posted it, there were no SEO people logged into WF so I'm trying here (and being more specific)
I just ran across a set of SB sites that I'd missed, didn't know they were there.
Attemped to fill out profiles to get an extra backlink and found that roughly a
third of the ones listed in this SB framed blaster site (SocialPoster, similar to SocialMarker) have some kind of karma system.. it appears you have to do X before you have earned the right to do... and that's not clear either.
Here on WF if you just signed up, you do not have the right to a sig file without a predetermined number of posts (a karma system)
All I see with this sub set of SB sites (they appear to be all running the same script, perhaps even owned by the same organization, just using more than one domain) is a driop down menu with this: -4 votes, -3 votes, etc
Can someone clue me into what it is these script wants?
am I to understand that we're expected to vote for 4 bookmarks belonging to other people before we're allowed to have a profile?
