How do I know If my website has been penalized or it drops its rank due to 404 error?

Hi I tried to get help on my previous post too but admin deleted that post. I have a coupon's website in which we lost ranking for our main keywords. Now we have not even half of the traffic that we use to have. Few days ago we receive a massage at WMT indicating 404 error, but I am not sure if it happened because of our link building or this 404 error.

    It's because of link building and not the 404 pages. When did you lose ranking?

    Google imposed 2 types of penalties - algorithm penalty and manual penalty.

    If you've received manual penalty then you would receive message in Webmaster tools, and if it's algorithm penalty you can find it out after knowing the date of traffic drop. 404 errors doesn't make huge impact on rankings.
