301 redirect...do you need to keep the original

Hi Troops
I understand you should use 301 redircts (I'm going to use a Wordpress plugin to do this) for old pages to redirect to what they are now called in your new site (I've gone from a html site created in dreamweaverto a wordpress site).
So....do I need to keep the original web pages on the net, or is it ok to completely remove them?
