Because these domains are usually the money sites. It is still one of the best ways to make money online- that is you need to rank your money site for the chosen target keywords to appear on the top pages of SERPs.

Yes sure Youtube videos are also one of the great ways to market your business but still you also need to prioritize ranking your own domain name/website because this is where traffic should be converted to sales.

wouldnt it just be easier to rank quickly using yourtube then send the traffic to your site?, or does this somehow affect your conversion rate?

Well although you can really get a lot of views on YouTube this does not necessarily mean that you can rank Youtube better/faster than your money site. Remember that you also have a lot of competitors in YouTube and it is not always guaranteed that your YouTube video will stay on the top pages of SERPs even if you have a lot of views. Have you noticed there are a lot of trending videos within YouTube but not all these videos are seen on top pages of SERPs? I hope I am making sense here?

For me, ideally, I would still prefer to rank my site first then I could have a video on YouTube but will just make this as supplementary traffic to my site.

Additionally, not all YouTube users click on the link you refer from your video. So yes, there will always be an issue with conversion rate.

If you rank your domain high, you own that piece of online real estate.

YouTube videos can be taken down pretty quickly if YouTube sees fit.

You can build a pretty good email list on your own domain also

In some respects it makes the most sense to just rank a YouTube video. Then push the visitors from YouTube to the money site. I've made many thousand$ doing this.

Bad thing is you end up relying on YouTube for your income, and if YouTube makes one change that's not in your SEO favor, then you become broke!

If I put you in a room with 20 sellers (Youtube right sidebar) or in a room with one seller (self hosted page), which one would you be more likely to buy from?

Keep in mind, nobody gets on Youtube to watch a single video.

Assumes the same video on YT & self hosted.

If your monetizing Adsense directly on Youtube videos, go with ranking Youtube videos, that's what's being monetized. Otherwise rank your own page.

Yes I totally agree with yukon. Lets consider if you rank youTube Videos for particular phrases. What are the chances that user will click that link to your site. Most of the user doesn't bother much to read description. If your video is compelling enough, then also they don't mind escaping it and will move to other videos right to next.
