My Tag Page Is Ranked on #1 for a 2400 Exact Match Search Keyword. How Can I Rank A Targeted Page?

For some unknown reasons my tag page is ranked on #1 for a 2400 search volume keyword! When they visit the link they actually see a small portion of the main article. Now my question is how can I rank real page which is containing the tag instead of the current tag page? Also if I do a redirect then I might lost the ranking as Google usually dont show redirected pages on its first page.

You can no index tag pages with Yoast I believe, and if you are ranking I wouldn't redirect/mess with it like you said, it could backfire.

Tags and category pages within Wordpress can rank well. You simply need to do onpage SEO for them as you would any other webpage. Example of a well optimized inner category page:
Dyson Vacuum – Best Dyson Vacuum Cleaners

Example of a well onpage optimized tag page:
Corded Vacuum - Vacuums With Cords

When you create a category/tag you can edit the url (keyword), and title/description using Yoast.

Instead of looking at the tag as a red-headed step child, embrace it as another opportunity to get relevant search traffic. Even though the categories and tags are usually "duplicate content" in the sense that they aggregate other posts/content from your website, doesn't seem to impact too greatly their ability to rank in my experience.

How are those pages well optimized? I see nothing optimized about those pages.

It's as optimized as you can get it.

The keyword exists in the url
The title of the page is optimized

Yoast has a description section but most themes don't show it.

I have another website that is ranking for its tags/category pages. The main take away is don't have them be duplicate / reiterations of posts/pages and you can rank them as well.

If you have multiple tags/categories/posts all trying to rank for the same phrase that's when you get into trouble. If you plan it out well, the hierarchy, they should be looked at as regular webpages.

DO NOT noindex the tag page until you have another page already ranking.

Not necessary to over-complicate it. The categories and tag pages within Wordpress and other CMS are simply treated as another webpage, which means it can rank for related phrases.

You can have a tag page that is more general, i.e. commercial vacuums, but have a post that talks about a specific commercial vacuum (in the examples I showed).

If you have tags that are duplicate, or very similar to other posts/pages, i.e. a category for commercial vacuums, and a tag for commercial vacuums, and a post targeting that main phrase, then you have a problem.

Just think about the hierarchy. Very general -> general -> specific. Tags can stay indexed from the start as long as they don't conflict with other onpage seo.

Exactly, tags are the same as a category so remove tags.

My point was tags aren't needed when you already have a category page. OP is currently ranking a tag page (only a tag page). Op doesn't want the tag page ranked, they want the full sales page ranked.

You suggested to noindex the ranked tag page which will leave OP with no pages ranked.

That's crazy trying to remove a ranked page before you already have a 2nd page ranked for the exact same keyword (the full sales page).

I am really curious how did you manage to rank a TAG page... Never happened to me. Well... You can also do a redirection to your main article of course, but another good idea is to start working on your other link too (this way you will get a great page on #1 and another on 1st page for example!)
