What pages to include in sitemap?

I assume that only public content pages should be included in a sitemap but what about all the other stuff that my generator program picks up? These include audio and video files and pdf downloads.

Another thing: my sitemap includes both rootdomain.com and rootdomain/index.html
These are the same page but I suppose that's so obvious that there's no potential to confuse it with duplicate content???

Are there any guidelines about what goes into a sitemap?
#include #pages #sitemap

      rootdomain.com and rootdomain/index.html ARE duplicated content. You should choose which one you want to use and 301 redirect the other url to it. A .htaccess file would be the easiest way to do this.

      Generally, in a sitemap, yes you only want content that is going to be read, i.e. static pages, posts, etc.

    yep... you also want to keep out any pages you dont want to show up in the index - like pages that people have to opt-in to see...
