Will "renewing" my Wordpress posts damage SEO?

I have 15 large posts on my wordpress site. I'm ranking in Google okay for search terms relating to the content, now I know a few others have copied/quoted the content online but this isn't an issue because Google clearly recognizes I'm the owner due to using webmasters and Google Authorship and submitting it first.

However what happens if I now go in and renew my content - Will Google now see these as brand new content and put me in last place then as regards "the first to post the content"?
Please offer me some advice as my posts are really in need of an update regarding hyperlinks, pictures and content changes but I don't want to do it in case my rankings drop.

Really appreciate any advice or feedback, thanks.

Why do you feel your posts are "in need" of anything if you are ranking ok?

If you are going to do something good, i.e. a compulsory edit, then that will stay fine and will not hurt your ranking. On the other hand, if the editing is going to do something bad, for example if you are going to put some (sponsored) external links to low quality sources, then yes, the renewing may hurt you in some ways.

Editing the content for good is good. A couple of weeks ago, I edited some of my oldest posts, removed (unnecessary) excessive external links and entirely deleted some low quality posts. The result was great improvement in ranking for edited content, as well as entire ranking of my content improved considerably. That was surely the renewing of my content which result this improvement.

    It doesn't work that way.

The page with better SEO wins in the SERPs, it doesn't matter when the orgional content was posted or who posted it.

As an experienced guy of this exact situation I suggest you to, only MODIFY the existing content but not change it to a large extent. Also, if you want to modify all 15 pages of content; don't upload all modifications in a single day. Do it slowly and steadily, Google doesn't like drastic changes in quick time. Hope that helps you.

If you add new content which is unrelated to your keywords, then it would be sudden drop in your keyword rankings. So renew related contents which is much related to your targeted keywords.
