What Just Happened? Aargh help please!

I get most of my traffic from organic Google searches. I don't do too much in the way of SEO (so I don't know what I could have done to earn a penalty) and I certainly don't do anything blackhat. But I woke up this morning and my organic traffic has virtually dried up over the course of a few hours.

I checked Google Webmasters and I don't have any messages indicating a penalty. Does anyone have any thoughts about why this might have happened?



(I'm in the UK, so it was just about midday when I took that screen cap & I should have had at least triple the number of hits)

    Google Analytics has delay in registering the newest tracking data. Today is the thirteenth so you're way early with this haphazard comparison.

    Apart from that, why are you posting only two data points? That's not nearly enough to give any opinions on your traffic patterns.

      Same happened to me OP, between the hours of Midnight and 7 am GMT. Have verified that most of my keywords have dropped out of the top 100. Some still there though, including a few on the front page.

        Same here... I have sites that were ranking page 1 that I hadn't touched in months that are still there but sites that were on page 1 or close that are gone... friggin' great...

    Who knows, maybe backlinks? It's tough to tell from just that post.

    I will say though that these days a bad backlink profile can crush rankings exactly like you experienced.

    What kind of link building were you participating in?

    I also had another website penalized today, no big deal, I'm use to this already lol. Easy come easy go. The way I look at it, build a thousand sites and you should be good.

    I'm internally facepalming to these "same thing happened to me" comments here. You're either saying that you too don't know how your analytics tool works, or you're comparing apples to oranges. Nowhere did OP say that SERP positions have dropped.

    Guys, do you not realize that Google Analytics delays the data for at least couple of hours unless you happen to be using their much limited real time API?

        He gave too little data with obvious source of error as his only proof that even the number of visitors to his site from all the traffic sources is down. Of course OP could now come back to say that indeed his traffic and/or SERP positions dropped on 13th, but until that I think it's a stretch.

        Funny thing from the screencap: Analytics is like "Hey dude, your traffic increased by 11,71%!".
