This may sound like a stupid question but is it possible to have too many pages indexed in Google?

I have a wordpress based site with about 300 articles, however I have over 2000 pages indexed by google. The majority of these pages are tag pages generated by wordpress.

I am wondering if I should set my tag pages to noindex and remove them from the google index, so google know that my remaining pages are the important entries.

After all these tag pages are largely useless and contain very little text.

Will it do more harm than good to remove this many pages from Google?

The way I look at it, the ratio of backlinks and page visits to indexed pages would increase in my favor, but maybe google doesn't take this into consideration.

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Building a silo structure is helpful, so I would leave the categories as they are. You could only have a duplicated content issues, so using a canonical tag would be recommended, as WP as far as I now doesn't use it for categories.

I have no intention of removing my category pages, since the help google know the structure of my site. My question is in relation to the volume of tag pages indexed and if having them harms my sites ranking.
