How Important is the "Relevancy" of Your Backlinks?

I've been adding backlinks and was wondering if Google considers the relevancy of "where" you get your links from.

Anyone know anything about this?

    IMHO...

    They do and they don't.

You want some to be relevant, but since neither you nor Google has any control over who links to you they are just looking at the PR of the site, any anchor text and how many you have.

This is borne out by Matt Cutts as well as many in the industry.

Many will disagree, but that is what I have read, and my experience is consistent with it.

There is a such thing as 'too relevant' which makes a site look over-engineered.

Obviously if you can get links from within your niche great but look at the quality of those pages. You can get better results from links on high quality non-relevant pages than low quality relevant pages.

Relevancy is a factor but you cant get much quality and higher PR pages where you can build backlinks.

As long as the no of backlinks is coming from quality pages, its worthier.

I think keywords in the anchor text have more importance than the relevancy of the website it is on.
