Even when you validate sites like facebook you get various number of errors and warnings but i don't think it really effects the ranking of the site ,but I am not sure .So can anyone clear up my confusion?

It doesn't really matter. Of course you can use validators, and if you find any huge issues it's a good idea to fix them. If you're just learning HTML the exercise might benefit you.

Validation not effects in ranking, but it helpful in traffic, because if your website has lots of HTML error, and some browser skips the website, if they found lots of error, or not shown your website correctly in browser, so validation is important for browser comparability.

What if the site is showing 30-40 errors and some warnings.Do I need to validate my site even then and mostly the errors include obsolete tags error.

Browser testing is important for browser compatibility, not validators. Usually validators just return a ton of stuff that's not in any way important. I'm not sure what you mean by "some browser skips the website" - it's not a phenomenon I know of.

For browser testing you can take tool such as Browserstack or Sauce Labs that offer browsers instances over HTTP. No need to install browsers or get other operating systems.

If you've already done the validation, why don't you just go ahead and fix the errors? If you feel that the list is nothing to worry about you're probably right. Validators are over sensitive compared to browsers, which basically make something out of any mess you throw at them.

No need to pay money for testing, both of those you mentioned are paid options, here is free alternative that works just as well. Check Browser Compatibility, Cross Platform Browser Test - Browsershots

Browsershots is a fine tool for what it is, and enough for many purposes. Those two I mentioned are more advanced. They allow you to really surf the site and test any forms or user interfaces that you've built. I'm also doing CRO, and Browsershots' model just isn't enough.

BTW, Sauce Labs does have a free account. 30 min/month is actually quite a lot of testing, because you can close the VM when you're not looking at the site.

As others have said, it's more to make sure that your page displays the same in different browsers.

I test critical sites in Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. If they display the same in those - or close to the same - then I'm happy enough.

You can run a free validation check at W3C, just don't be too scared by the results - it picked up 52 errors on this thread alone!

Add the most recent Safari, and you're set. (Just because Apple is being Apple, and breaking things. Again.)

I've tested a really HTML invalid site into validation. Didn't make a difference. A lot of Google's pages are invalid. Hrmmm? I believe validation could be an issue if it created a bad user experience.
