1st Page of Google... Yeah Right!

One Friday evening, I decided to put up a blog for an offline prospect in lieu of meeting with him the following week. I put up the one page blog, did some backlinking, and hoped that I would have enough time to get it to Page 1 on Google before meeting up with this prospect.

On the Saturday morning, I just went to see if the blog had been indexed, and if so where it was ranking. Surprise, surprise, not only was the blog indexed it was top spot on Google. Yes it was No. 1 on Google in less than 18 hours. Now bear in mind that I have never had a No. 1 spot in Google prior to this. I am no Guru unfortunately

Now the question I guess you are asking is, "was I excited?" My answer: "was I heck!"

Warriors I hope I am not the only one who is just not getting it with all this 1st page of Google hype?

Can I just make one thing very clear. My four year old son can get to the 1st page of Google, and he doesn't even know how to switch on a PC.

The number of times I have seen sale page after sale page tout their product as if it is the best thing since sliced bread, simply because it got ranked No. 1 for certain keywords.

No, I don't have a problem with that in itself. However, when you dig deeper, you discover that for anyone with just an inkling of IM, it is easier to be on Page 1 than Not on Page 1.

Let's put it this way, for some keywords, you will have to work very hard to get a page off of Page 1.

So why do vendors carry on as if 1st Page of Google is the Holy Grail, especially when they know how easy it is to rank for the keywords they use on their sales page?

    Depending on the keyword

Internet Marketing ------- in 18 hours
....don;t think so (but...could be wrong)

It is a big deal to get 1st page for a highly competitive Keyword
and it is no easy feat. Organizations have whole departments dedicated
    to keeping it there.

You are right though......anyone can rank for

    "Idaho Spade Shovels"

or anything else that has zero competition

The question is what was it ranking for?

Sure anyone can rank first place on Google for "Why I want hot dinners in Texas" because a tiny tiny amount of people want to rank for that, if anyone.

Try ranking on page one of Google for "low cost loans" however and you will see it is a different matter.

Now, put all that together and realize that sustained ranking on page one of Google for a range of targeted keywords that appeal to your target market and that focus around buy key phrases which will provide valuable traffic because of what they typed into Google, is NOT easy.

If thats an easy overnight job for you then send me a PM as I have a spare couple of $1k id be happy to throw your way

Sorry guys. I thought I mentioned that it was a long tail keyword with not much search volume. It was actually for a local offline business, so I guess you get the drift.

The point I was trying to make is that it is super easy to rank for all these long tail keywords, but long tail keywords seem to be all that the vendors & gurus use in their sales pitch.

There are some notable exceptions, Angela V. Edwards being one.

      Some clarification...

being on page 1 of Google for
      "cheap motor insurance"
      "lose weight fast"
      "wedding favours"
      "double your money"

      are definitely money spinners.

but show me one sales page that is touting Page 1 of Google that ranks for a money spinning term.

i'm not saying page 1 of Google doesn't matter. I'm saying page 1 of google for
"my grandmother went into hospital last week"
doesn't cut it & that is what many sales pitches are touting.

I did a short article today and was on page 1 of Google for a three word keyword phrase in about a half hour or so.

But, it's one with low search volume, so I don't suspect results will be very profitable.

I think you've articulated the problem very clearly.

It should be results that matter, not being on Page 1 of Google. How much traffic are you generating, how much of it is converting into sales etc.

But these people don't seem to mention this fact in their sales pitch.

Search how to train "a/your" dog, when I checked last more than one salespage was on the front page of Google, so it can be done.

        On Topic..

There's something a lot of people are missing on SEO and that is a lot of the people on the front page are using blackhat methods but are getting away with it.

All you have to do is check some peoples backlinks and you'll notice they come from the crappest websites ever, obviously only created to house relevant content and link juice.

Google, can be defeated easily with these methods but I personally wouldn't be bothered going to the extreme of setting up websites and adding content just to get my links there.

Also the magical search strings, that many use to make thier SEO 10X more powerful is what makes for a good SEO strategy.

if you rank #1 for a high search volume term like wedding favors it can mean 8 figure sales for you topline.

Simple. Listen to vendors who get on the first page for core keywords (2-3 keywords) with high to decent search count.

And yes getting ranked for those keywords is still considered the holy grail IMO.

Ranked in first page of Google also depend on what country of Google website as well. If you ranked first page in Google.co.uk, this does not mean that your page will be on the first page in Google.com, Google.ws, Google.com.au and etc.

There are three things you need to do to improve your ranking:

      1. On Page SEO... things like the title for your web page, meta tags, file name, image tags, keyword density etc. There are many guides around that tell you how to do this.

      2. Content. Write engaging content and people will link to you naturally. Which leads to

      3. Off Page SEO... this involves actively procuring backlinks to your web page. You can use a signature file in forums like this, comment on blogs, use social bookmarking, links from social network sites e.g facebook, links from video site e.g. youtube.

This can be quite tedious, and some people prefer to outsource it. Funny enough, I run such a service, but there are many other good ones on the forum.

What are you trying to ranlk for? If it is an easy keyword you may not need to go all out for it to get to page 1.

Man..First of all.. when I read your thread here, I was surprised that how you managed this all, but at the same time I myself come to a conclusion that whatever keyword you ranked in the top may not at all a short tail keyword since a short tail keyword has a high density as well as the larger competition too. If you drive the same thing in less span of time for the keyword *cheap cars*, I will say you as my GURU.

But still... you ranked top in Google and Congrats for that.. keep high always..!!
