I keep hearing that Google loves video and that any site using it has an edge.

But how is this? Spiders can't read video so all they know is that you have it on your site. Is this enough to give a benefit?

If so, all I need to do is set up a page with a bunch of cheap, quick videos. Of course it would be helpful if they offer relevance and quality information but there's no way Google can know that.

Can anyone explain this?

Google owns youtube. Therefore google spiders youtube regularly. On sites like youtube, you can add a description(with keywords) and backlink to your videos and this is what people are talking about.

Using Video Marketing - you can get more people/customers/leads simply from video sites like Youtube.com , DailyMotion.com etc. who perform searches on the sites themselves. Remember that video that you submit will have tags/keywords relating to your site and you can include a link (URL) to your website in the video description.

Secondly videos are ranking highly for keywords in Google - So if a video that you submitted ranks highly for a number of keywords then you will get targeted traffic just from that video ranking highly in SERPS.

Also Google spiders video sites very frequently - this means that your site will be spidered / re-indexed more frequently.

Lastly people prefer watching videos rather then reading a bunch of text/articles.

    Hope that helps.

There are two things here. Using video on YOUR site and using videos to PROMOTE your site. Very different in terms of SEO. For using video on YOUR site: put keywords right before and after the embedded video, have the keywords in all the usual places, etc. I'm not sure what more you can do for SEO here.

For using video to PROMOTE your site: name every single file, image, text doc that you create your video with your keywords. Google and others cannot scan the video for its actual content, but the original file names used to make the video get embedded into the final video file. Also, when you upload it, use keywords in the title, file name (keyword.wmv), tags, and put the URL (with http://) in the description field (most sites turn this into a hotlink).
