I bought a new domain. Was it penalized by Google?

Hi,
End of 2013 I bought a new domain name and on 15th of January I started putting content on it. Homepage was targeting some medium competitive keywords. It is of super high quality, more than 4000 words, external links to useful resources, and I also built a few backlinks (but not too many).

Nevetheless, the site is still NOT ranking for my main keyword, not even in the 500 first results.

I checked in the wayback machine if the domain had been used before, and it was. Back in 2001, there was a site there; and also back in 2011 (was kind of a parked domain, though, since there was a lot of ads).

Is it possible that my website has been penalized in the past by Google and the penalization still runs? Which means, I will never get it ranked for my main keywords, right?

My website is Comment Gagner de l'Argent? Les Méthodes qui Marchent, Sans Arnaques., if someone wants to check it and make sure it is actually a quality site and check it inthe wayback machine or in seomoz.

Thank you in advance
Nicolas.

Are you targeting French or English SERPs? Your content is French.

That is because you dont have relevant backlinks, you are trying to rank for a very competitive term (even in french) that is how to make money (Comment gagner de l'argent), you need a lot of relevant high PR backlinks to rank for that term, even in french

      Hi,
      Thanks for your answer!
Yes, I know this is a competitive term and I was not expecting to rank in the first page after the first month, but at least to show up in the first 500 results.
      That's why I'm pretty concerned.
Is it normal to not appear EVEN in the page 50?
      Nicolas.

It would be fairly safe to say that there are far more then 500 sites competing for that keyword, even in France.

I have an old friend from France named Nicolas.

Ok, so all of you really discard what I was asking in my original post, i.e that my domain site has been penalized from before I bought it and that I will never rank for that keyword for that reason.

          Please could you confirm?

So maybe I am that Nicolas, who knows? But I don't know any Kevin Maguire, except if it's a fake name

Like patadeperro said, you have 18 weak backlinks. Build better links.

    There's no penalty.

      Hi,

Well I'm targeting a competitive keyword for my homepage but my other articles are targeting low competition long tail keyword. I was hopoing to get traffic from these articles first... but none of them is ranking any high in Google yet. I think it is also weird, since they are low competition.

      What do you think?

      Nicolas.
