I wish there was an exact formula for that but I can give you some hints that give you negative points, especially in combination with a brand new site.

    Exact Match Domain
Cause of this you have to be more careful with onpage and offpage optimization as the keyword appears much more often so it can work against you.

    Over monetized
Especially for brand new sites this is an absolute way to get slapped by Panda

    Pages that offer no value
Just publishing content to have something to publish is frowned up on by Panda, I mean pages that are way too closely related, like one page for: "electrcian Atlanta" one page for "Atlanta electrician", one page for "Electrician in Atlanta", sure extreme example but you get my point

    Duplicate content
Can be caused by tag, archive, date, category, homepage in case you use a CMS like Wordpress, although if you use canonical tags this is not a huge problem imo, unless you heavily over do your tags and such. Still this won't tank you afaik. There are worse ways of duplicate content that can get your site in trouble, like I said above, pages that offer no value. But also pages like lead gen sites for example. Where they have a separate page for each city/region where it almost looks like it's spun, I mean you can describe something only in a limited amount of ways unless you're very creative. This type of stuff can definitely hurt your rankings and if in combo with a little doubtful link building it will tank you for sure.

    Site structure
Google likes to see well structured sites, I've seen plenty of sites get into trouble cause they are just publishing post after post in the one and only category, perhaps it can work in combination with pagination at the bottom of the post but most of the sites that deal with these issue's only have an 'older posts' link at the bottom of the page. Not sure if this will tank you but I've seen plenty of cases where rankings stagnate due to this. So better prevent and setup a decent way of navigation on your site.

I never have any issue's with ranking my own sites with links from my network and I'm being quite aggressive with zero focus on other links then my own. My money sites are build in such way that they take all of the above points into account and thus I can get away with paid/artificial links, while other people's sites can't handle it some times.

I have one affiliate client of mine that setups proper sites, in the beginning we had some issue's where certain sites tank. After talking plenty about it he now follows my approach and we also do the link building in the same style as I do for my own site and since then it's going pretty well, at least I haven't heard any tank stories and he still sends a good amount of money each month.
