Hi Everyone, I have a question about my sites rankings on google, Last year i was ranking in the top 5 for all my keywords, but since the updates have gone down to in between 18-30 position, this is for my keywords plus city name. However if i search for my keywords minus my city name I am ranking on the first page, i was ranking 4th now gone down to 8th. I dont understand how this could happen? i have my city name in my title,H1,Content.......and my city name in some of my backlinks. I have tried to increase my SERPS but no matter what i do it wont budge.

Any guidance or comments would be much appreciated.

Chris from your post it is confirmed that your promote your website in Region Specific, So can you add, targeted location on google webmaster tools or not. If not please set it. And your keywords is also a region specific, and people who set it google give more prominence and ranked in top position as compared to your keywords.

Do You have any specific reason for Targeting your site to a particular region or city?

Assuming they are referring to the site in their signature, it is a real business and a majority of their customer base will be local.

Hi Guys, yes that's correct most of my business is done in my city and not world wide, I enjoyed high rankings for my site for about a year then it went down to second page, i have analysed my competitors websites and some that are ranking dont even have any backlinks, i dont understand what has gone wrong! i have thought that i could have had too many backlinks of low quality. I have not received any manual actions or notifications in web master tools. any tips would be appreciated.

Your link profile for the site in your forum sig. shows some spammy links on pages with payday type links.

You also have a few 404s on your site that you might want to fix.

Thanks for the info Yukon, I know the links you are referring too, they once were not too bad but think now they are spammy, quick question, all the spam links dont show in my webmaster tools, dose that mean that they need removing still or is the big G ignoring them?

One link I'm looking at (PR4) was a junk link long before your link was added to the page, there's a bunch of other sites random junk links with anchor text like Best Flat Iron, Porn, payday loan, side sleeper pillow, etc...

Even without a warning message in WMT I'm sure Google knows those are spammy backlink pages, the pages are indexed & cached so they obviously know about your links on those pages.

I would be surprised If you could get those links removed. If those webmasters allow spammers to blast their pages they're probably not going to respond to an email. Example, the last blog post on that site with the PR4 backlink was last updated in 2009, that guy is long gone.

I would build a few really good links, let that sit for a week or two & see how Google SERPs responds.
