How would you recover from single page penalty?

I have ecommerce site and have been building links using guest posting, resource links etc.

Today one of my internal category page (say URL 1) lost ranking from 1st page for a keyword in google. Now it is NOwhere to be found. Instead one of the product page from that category is now on page 3.

My guess is that I lost ranking cause of one bad link that I built recently, I removed the link today and am hoping for the best.

Is there anyone who has experienced something like this only one internal page lost ranking, literally nowhere in google, and were you able to recover after removing that bad backlink?

Again, I have not received a domain penalty as all the other internal pages as well as homepage is still ranking. Only that particular URL 1 has lost ranking.

Would appreciate any feedback.

Yeah, it's unlikely that you will be able to recover from a link penalty.

So what you want to do is delete the page. Then rebuild the page on a new url of your site (name the url differently). And try to put unique content on that page (unique from your deleted page).

Then your page penalty is gone. You will have to start building links again to the page. But use clean links this time.

Resource links and guest posting isn't really going to do anything for your rankings. You need pr PAGE links. Preferably from sites within your niche. If you can't find them you need to start buying expiring pr domains and build a phony little site on there.

Then put a link on the home page back to your site. Those are the most powerful links you can get.

Just because a page disappears in the SERPs doesn't necessarily mean a penalty, it could be a temporary problem.

I would leave the old page/links alone & build a 2nd internal page targeting the exact same keyword with unique page title/content, build some decent links pointing at the new page.

The old page might bounce back, If it doesn't you'll have a 2nd page in the works for the same keyword.

Thanks a for the advice yukon & TheAdsenseGuy.

I thought about creating a second page targeting the same keyword and then building new links and re-targeting the old links ( will have to send couple emails to site owners). I will create the new page and wait a while before redirecting the backlinks.

What surprised me and still shocks me is that the Bad backlink I created got cached on Feb 26 and today in the morning I checked my page was gone. How one Bad link can affect ranking is just mind blowing.

I wouldn't touch the old links because they might not be a problem. Just build fresh links to the new page.

Do those two pages/URLs show they're indexed in Google SERPs?

        Example: site:www.warriorforum.com/adsense-ppc-seo-discussion-forum/908666-how-would-you-recover-single-page-penalty.html

Check both www & non-www URLs.

Those pages have been indexed for a longtime now, but 404 cache only happened today and I checked it because I lost that url completely in Serp.

Regarding the site:nonwww.website index test, the two urls are there.

Still do not know what I did wrong to cause this chaos / ranking loss other than 1 bad backlink.

          Thanks Yukon.
