Experienced User: Wondering if I understood the title tag template in Yoast SEO plugin

Ok, I have been a long time user of WP and have been using All in one SEO(AIOS).

Given the multitude of functions it has I thought of trying Yoast's SEO plugin.

In AIOS, I would define a post title (<strong>How to tie a a tie?</strong>) and it will automatically take the site name (<strong>Mashable</strong>) from the template to make it
for example: <strong>How to tie a a tie? | Mashable</strong>

We do have template system in WP SEO but it works in either/or mode. If I don't set anything in my post title it picks the default format fine but in case I put something in the post level title box, it doesn't automatically pick the site name.

I am wondering, is this the expected behavior of this plugin?

(I have tinkered with settings like force rewrite, setting wp_title etc but all in vain)

Thanks!

Title templates are explained on Yoast's site (link also in the plugin help).

Yes, if you choose to override the title it will get completely overwritten. That's the expected behaviour.

    I have seen that already.

While his plugin is excellent, this particular thing is not a very smart solution. He himself recommends putting brand name in the title, yet when you to choose to customize it, you would need to fill the brand name by your own which should ideally come from the template.

I don't use plugins for stuff like that. All you have to do is hard code the site name in the theme (<title>) & add a Custom Field on the post/page.

    Example: <title>Custom Field text here - domain.com</title>

    ...or: <title>Post/Page Title here - domain.com</title>

    What yukon said.

In my opinion it's not much of an issue to just copy the site name there.
