Something i am seriously confused about at the moment.

I bought my domain straight from namecheap 3 days ago and when i put my domain into ahrefs.com to check backlinks etc it is telling me i have 480 backlinks and 162 referring domains. How is this even possible? I have no done any traffic building of any kind?

According to the data i have been building links to this domain since beyond march 2013?

What the hell am i reading?

Actually there are times that when you buy the domain, it was already dropped by someone, everyday there are thousands of dropped domain and thousands are registered. You're lucky if you got a good one...

What was the PR did you check it on google?

You also mentioned that this could be a good thing that i have picked one of these up. However, could it also mean that it could be a bad thing. I am an affiliate and if this was dropped then this could be a sign that it's not a profitable asset?

The domain may have been penalized by Google and hence the previous owner dropped it. The backlinks you're seeing right now may not necessarily be good news.

Is there a way to check to see if it has been penalized?

I searched my site in google and it doesn't show up. Does that suggest that my site is in fact penalized?

Yes it was a good thing but only "if you got a good one"..There are still chances that the domain you have purchased has got penalized. I don't buy dropped domains that are dropped today or yesterday and when I check on google with site:url.com, it doesnt come up with anything or any indexed pages.

So better check it or you just need to buy a new one...Also I have replied to your pm =)

The quality in the links is not bad. Why would i need to buy a new domain? Surely i can just add better quality links to get this ranked higher?

Yes, it would be good idea to add better quality links and ranked higher. However, you should use some other tools as well like Open site explorer to check ranking.

You could start by looking at the backlink profile. See if the backlinks look spammy, like too many crappy blog comments or forum profile links and stuff like that. look for over optimized anchor texts. Go to archive.org and take a look at the website before it got expired. Look if the pages were optimized heavily like over optimized title tags and/or content and stuffs like that. You said you're an affiliate? is the domain an exact match of your keyword? a lot of EMD's were hit by google last year so may be your domain was one of them.

Yes my domain is an EMD.

Yeah i believe i have a domain here that has been penalized. With 482 backlinks and 163 referring domains surely it would show up in the search results in google. Don't they say if you search your site in google by your domain and it doesn't show up that's a clear sign that it has been penalized? Also a clear sign that it has been dropped. Would it be okay to pm you my link and you can take a look at it? Only if you don't mind...

If my domain has been penalized and i only purchased it 3 days ago, can i go namecheap and tell them that it's been penalized or do they not care? Could i get it changed or what do you suggest i do?

      Thanks

If anyone is good at checking to see if a site is penalized (i have no clue how to find that out). I will pm you my site and i would really appreciate if somebody could confirm that it is or isn't penalized.

        I would really appreciate this!

        Thanks guys.

I believe you're stuck with the domain now. I dont think namecheap would give you a refund just because the domain turned out to be penalized by google. Thats not their problem. Your best bet would be to start over with a new domain. All this is if the domain has been penalized. Sure send me a PM.

When you buy a new domain may be it was owned by someone else in the past and expired. But the backlinks are live.

Also it happens that many who-is sites index new domains very soon. Thus you get new backlinks fast. Also please check the backlinks in the ahrefs site. You can find the truth who have link back to you.

        Hope it will help.
        Thanks

That is correct. It was owned by somebody in the past and it was used as an affiliate site as well. This guy who previously owned this domain has over 50 domains. So he is obviously an affiliate who knows what he's doing. He has dropped this site for the only 2 reasons that i can think of.

          1. Penalized.
          2. Not profitable.
          Or Both..

I checked the backlinks in ahrefs and they are decent backlinks. I also checked the archive.org and his previous site looked quality. I can not see how it's penalized but i can't see no other reason why my site is not ranked with this amount of backlinks/referring domains.

May be those backlinks are not of high quality and spam. In this case your domain is also not good in the eye of Google.

As you have already bought the domain do one thing cut all those backlinks from Google webmaster tool and submit the sitemap again. Once you do it within 2-3 weeks google will re-index your website and this will be purely new.

After this start new link building.

Sorry for being such a newbie My site is showing up in google now when i search my site. It still says PR N/A but it tells me it's indexed.

How do i cut all the backlinks like you suggest? I am in google webmaster tools and i don't see the option for this.

When i click on links to your site i get the 'No data available'

This is the funnies thread I've seen in a while.

Can we change the title to.

"Can anyone make a random assumption about these "Unknown" variables."

Probably this, probably that, maybe this, might be that.

You don't even know if they guy has the website hosted yet.

Yeah that was just an example of the problem here m8.

We don't know anything about the domain at all.

        It's history
        It's content
        Previous links
        It's current content
        It's current SEO
It's current status in Google (Penalties etc..)
        The keywords you are targeting

The list goes on and on my friend.

        All we know is.

You bought a domain and didn't check it's history "before" you bought it. But you seemed to know how to check it's history after you bought it. (Weird)

And you say your a "newbie" to SEO, but yet believe in yourself, that you can analyze a link profile and tell if it's a good one or not. You know all the tools to use also. (More Weird)

If you want to find out if there has been a manual spam penalty. Just plug it in Google Webmaster Tools for a couple of days, you will soon see the manual action pop up in there.

Fair enough. Yes, i am a newbie. I am only following the course that i currently purchased. Which he stated that i should not share my potential assets as somebody else could get in on it to (somebody better) and take everything that i could of had if i had of protected it. Therefor i never shared my domain.

I knew that i would never get a proper answer but i knew i would get pointed in the right direction to finding out myself and i have done. Without this thread i would have never found out and i still have my sites protected.

I am sure you can understand that. I have pm'd one guy my domain, it's better sharing it with one than sharing it with millions.

Like i said, i an a newbie so why would i check the domain before i bought it? However from this thread i'll never make that same mistake again.

So in many ways this thread was a success to me.

          Thanks anyways.

I'm not asking you to share your domain name here, I could care less. My point is still the hundreds of possibilities that could be causing the problems for you, could never be outlined in a forum thread.

Just as you have demonstrated above.

Every other poster was "presuming" your sites under penalty, your links are spammy etc..etc..

When all along, it was a basic robots.txt problem. You found that out when you gave someone appropriate info (the domain to look at). Anyone without such info was just fishing in the dark with useless presumptions based on brain jellyfarts.

Good to see you got it sorted. Good luck with your site.

Thing is that it was in use before you bought it, and backlinks were not removed so you see the links,
And for your site not showing in google, did you ping and index it?
