Bing Update

For anybody who is interested, I'm fairly certain that Bing released an update to their search rankings today.

I monitor a number of keywords constantly and I've seen big changes over the last 24 hours.

I haven't yet been able to pinpoint the direction this update is taking us in whether it's a link based approach, on-page changes or something else entirely.

    Considering that Bing is at least a good 8-10 years behind Google, that would mean they are at about the Jagger update or maybe Bourbon update.

      I doubt anyone at Bing still shows up for work.

      Guys, this is just my experience from having sites that have held top 3 positions for several years - some of which have dropped off the first page so it's a significant change as far as I can see.

      Remember that according to Statcounter's global stats, Bing still accounts for 17% of US search traffic (this includes Yahoo too since it is powered by Bing with only a few alterations).

      This represents millions upon millions of searches so it IS still worth thinking about.

    Agreed. Since Google's updates, 98% of my visitors are from Bing.

    Ok so here are my thoughts/findings on this apparent Bing update:

    1. It is still ongoing - results are not yet stable

    2. They've got it all wrong - there are plenty of examples where some of the results returned are now totally useless to the searcher.

    3. Bing are getting location based results wrong - I see some US results despite being in the UK. At the same time they are trying to show me results based on my city/region which don't have any relevancy to my search. When using a Chrome incognito browser window these location based results disappear.

    4. I see root domains with just 1 backlink outranking others with 100s (this suggest a possible over-optimisation penalty)

    5. Internal pages are getting a lot more traction than they were. Bing used to, in my opinion at least, favour homepages when choosing who to rank.

    6. Because of #5, brands/authority sites seem to have benefited - in other words, a powerful homepage is more important than it was.

    7. Page titles seem to matter more than before - I have had pages that once ranked for several closely related keywords suddenly drop significantly for all but the phrase which was most prominent in the page title (the drop here was less dramatic). I can also see pages that have virtually no keyword backlinks for these terms rank and the only mention of the phrase is in the page title.

    These are just hypotheses at the moment of course and others might have different opinions based on the search terms they have most knowledge and experience in.

      Heres my findings, my websites are crap, are all on the first page in Bing, have 5 to 10 affiliate links on each page, and I’m above the “true authority sites.” In fact, the authority sites I compete against only appeared on the first page for a couple searches. I searched about 30 keywords out of the thousands I target. First page for all 30 I checked. In a few instances, I had seven websites on the first page.

      I don’t do links, no social media marketing or any type of SEO, just keyword rich content.

      Used seocentro and another website to check SERP rankings. I don’t think there was a change in SERP’s though. Unless there penalizing websites with good content. In that case I wouldn’t have noticed a thing.

    As far as #2, that has long been the case with Bing. What you cannot tell is did it get worse or better overall? None of us have enough data to prove that one way or the other. We each just have our little corner of the market.
