Penalized site do I get a new domain

So I had a couple of guys out here take a look at a site I inherited and just as I suspected, the existing links are super spammy and the site will not rank. (a lot of spammy links)

1 solution is to start fresh on a new domain...which I'm, fine doing BUT this client has a long history with the domain name with literature, letters, post cards, etc....

So my question is this, if I start with a new domain name...can I redirect the spammy one so we can retain all the traffic from analog channels?

Will that hurt me....will G still bring it's penalty over to the new domain name because the old spammy domain is being redirected?

Thanks guys...

You could nofollow the links on the old site pointing to the new site.

You get to keep everything, including the penalty.

Why don't you just drop the penalized pages?

Drop the penalized pages? I can't get rankings for anything. Are you speaking of Disavow?

        Sorry for being stupid....

I just want to start fresh....but the old domain has a ton of direct traffic (advertising on post cards, magazines, etc.) and we can not lose that. So what happens if I start fresh with a new domain name, move the site over there....then redirect the old spammy domain to the new domain name? Will the penalty be brought over because the old spammy domain points to the new fresh domain?

A full site de-index is very rare. Crazy stuff required.

Most penalties are on having certain links pointing to certain pages. Now if you remove those links or those pages. It's usually problem solved.

So I can drop the root of my domain. http://

And then make a new site on the sub www.

So long as I'm completely dropping the root, and not redirecting. Things should be fine.

If it's just on certain pages, you can just drop them too (their urls).

In my opinion, it's not worth the work to recover a penalized site. I'd rather just start a brand new domain, or better yet, buy an expiring one with super clean backlinks and repurpose it.

Don't redirect the spammy domain to a new site. You'll get the ranking boost for about 30 days then the penalty will eventually hit the new one.
