What does Market Samurai do that Keyword planner does not?

Hi,

IM Newbie. I am looking for keyword for a mini adword site I'm making. I'm going around in circles trying to figure out what Market Samurai does (I have it). I want to compare different synonyms of the same concept to see which gets more searches - weed, cannabis and Marijuana.
Should I just bin MS and focus on learning to use google adwords keyplanner?

    What you can get from MS is some degree of analysis on the organic competition for a keyword. That provides an indication of how hard it is to rank for that keyword.
    Now, if you are interested in adwords traffic, you should stick to the Keyword Planner, you will need to get the click estimates once you enter your bid for the keywords. You can not do that in MS.

      Just to clarify my post, I am looking at generating a little ad revenue through organic searches. I am learning about SEO and wordpress so if I get money to cover the hosting I'll per the time to learning a new skill :-)

      Am I understanding you correctly:
      MS indicates the organic traffic (how?)
      Keyplanner can be used to estimate paid traffic.

      I *thought* keyword planner showed the number of searches for a given phrase (correlated to organic search).

    Ok, let me explain better,

    Both MS and Keyword Planner will provide search estimates.
    Keyword planner will also allow you to estimate the actual paid traffic that you will receive from an Adwords campaign, depending on your bid and budget. This info is not available in MS.

    MS, on the other hand, will provide an indicator of organic competition, to help you determine how easy or how hard it is to rank high for a keyword. This is not provided by KP.

    Even when the analysis that MS does has a few missing points, it is a better starting point for your research if you want to get organic traffic.

    Be careful with putting too much trust in a less competitive synonym, nowadays Google understand them perfectly.

    MS throws out a bunch of numbers that look really important in order to justify its price, IMO. I used to be a huge fan of Market Samurai until I learned that all it really comes down to is being able to read the front page of the results. Once you get the hang of it you don't need a fancy tool to overwhelm you with stats.
