Quality is the approach you need to take. Yes, I`ve outranked all kinds of big names, like yh answers, amazon, ebay and whatnot. Just get a better salespage and get it SEO optimized. Matt Cuts, from google, said it himself, the only reason why those big websites get ranked for some terms is that because content of higher quality can`t be found by google crawlers.

Those sites don't exactly have sales pages, especially yahoo answers. Amazon certainly
does not just toss out "sales pages" to the public. They offer you a way to buy it. And
      easily.

As far as Matt Cutt's, something must have got lost in the translation. Yahoo,
amazon, ebay, certainly do not have high quality content.

What they do have is authority and have proven themselves over and over to
solve searchers questions, problems, and queries.

You can beat them for searches that they don't go for. An honest, spam-free way
      of deciding what to buy.

Paul beat me to it. Yahoo Answers is definitely NOT quality content. Who seriously chooses them when looking for serious information.

You would need to have high quality content, good engagement of your visitors on the content, high quality backlinks pointing to your site from other good quality and High PR sites.
All these will boom your rankings on Google.

You can beat any site including the site you mentioned above in terms of ranking, for this you have to make a good user engagement on your site, and when it comes to site like yahoo answers, the quality of content is secondary as this is from the general users also not always from the professionals. But the user engagement is always necessary.

One more thing, you can beat them in ranking, but you have to struggle for the "Popularity", as these sites are extremely popular, and people even searched them directly for some issues, whether that query is on top ranking SERP or not.

So build your site's "Online Reputation", to beat any site in terms of ranking, user engagement and popularity.
