Hi, I have a site that is targeting 6 main keywords.

If I produce more content targeting the long-tail keywords will that also increase the rankings of the original keywords?

Also does building links to articles increase their ranking? How about post categories in wordpress?

How long should I wait until I build links to the main domain?

Thanks for your answers.

Matthew.

    Hi Matt,

Building more content targeting long tail keywords you will effectivly be making your site more relevant (and authorative) to the main keywords, so in short, yes it will help. LSI is a big factor.

You should look at your articles like pages, so if you build links to them then you are increasing their strength.

Regarding the post catagories, they should rather be seen as adding structure to your site which helps establish overall relevance. Focus on ranking pages/posts instead.

You can start building links to the main domain within the first couple of weeks of starting out, just dont build hundreds a day! Start by increasing your social presence with shares - start setting up fan pages, google+ ect...(this is all a part of SEO and perfect for the first few weeks) and share posts/pages there, then move into someting like press releases (real, quality ones) and social bookmarks as this emmulates a natural link building pattern.

Hope that is clear and helps!

If your long-tail keywords includes main keywords then it is possible that your website will rank on main keywords. Recently I promoted my website for "website development India" keyword but it ranked on "web development India" as well.

Yes, building links to articles increase their ranking.

I use ahrefs(dot)com to check my backlinks after link building process. It is helpful for me.

Just creating more content is not going to increase the rank of your main kw.

You should build links to your pages as well. It will look more natural because you will have links pointing to pages other than your homepage and it will increase rankings of those pages and the whole website.

You can build links right away but start building them slowly.

I'm not gonna tell you how to link build because I literally just wrote about it a few posts ago but I feel compelled to answer you as you wrote me an inbound sales script once. Start straight away with your links though, just slowly, link from your twitter, fb, g+, LI and whatever else, some relevant directories, not super effective links but this is what real business sites who don't know about SEO do.

Then move onto finding sites where your audience always are, have something worth them sharing with their readers and ask for a link to it via email, or phone if you can find their info (seeing as that's your strength).

Nobody so far has mentioned your internal linking structure.

Yes, LSI is a factor, yes, you should build relevant authoritative links to your long tail pages where relevant.

But how does this help your main page rank? it doesn't really.

But what about if you throw a link to your main page on each of the long tail pages? POOF, as if by some kind of slut magic, they all add to the authority of the main page and help it rank.

Look up some info on site structure, I saw some pretty decent silo guide knocking around the place so check one of them out.
