Targeting Main Keyword on Home Page Versus a Specific Keyword Titled Page?

This is something I've wondered for awhile now.

I have a website where my complete keyword isn't in the URL (it made for better branding without it). I created a page named after my keyword and made that the home page (it's WordPress run). So let's say it's dog training as the keyword. My home page now reads in the browser's title: Domain Name | Puppy Training for Puppy Owners.

My question is would I be better positioned to rank for my keyword if that keyword was on a subpage, ie: domaindotcom/puppy-training and I optimized that page for puppy training (and sent my links to that page) instead of the home page and how I have it now?

Or am I over thinking this?

I believe if you do that then you will have that sub page rank, unless that is what you would like. Alternatively you can optimize the home page for the keyword "dog training". The URL won't be the problem, Google has a good grasp to know that companies use this for branding at times and not everyone has the pleasure of having a keyword in the URL.
