SEO ranking mayhem! Quick question.

I'm a web student who is new to SEO. I'm dissatisfied with the "don't worry about it, just have quality content" answer I've gotten from my profs (like I wouldn't have that anyway?) and I need the down-low.

Presumably, for seemingly untapped keywords, certain sites may rank high that are NOT targeting those keywords specifically (in their titles, description, content, and permalinks, and all that), HOWEVER, they may have a PR of (let's say) 4 and 1000 quality backlinks.

My question: is it probable to outrank those sites via keyword targeting?

E.g. When one searches, "how to go to cuba", the second highest ranking page looks like this:



As you can see they are not targeting the specific string, "how to go to cuba", however they do have a PR4 and 32 backlinks.

Can I outrank this page by targeting the exact string "how to go to cuba" with a PR of 0 and few backlinks?

    It shouldn't be hard depends on the fact there are no such words in the other website! So if you can a good domain name and if you could place a title like your desired keyword, it won't be hard. Good luck!

      You have absolutely no clue as to what you are talking about. You must be a bot.

      That is one of the most silliest reply I have ever read. It trumps your last one by far.

      Sites like that are authoritative. They don't have to target keywords or have
      some silly domain. And they are NOT easy to outrank with such silly advice as
      what you give. Insane, man. Insane.

        You can out rank those sites, PR is not that important, try building good content + quality backlinks
