Site got de-indexed today...

Hey guys,

I'm not 100% sure what the heck is going on today. I've been making good progress for a number of keywords on my blog for the last month (hxxp://www.pheromonepro.com).

This morning, I thought I got hacked because I couldn't access the site. Fortunately, I was wrong, because it went back to normal about a half hour later (still don't know how long it was down for before that)...

I believe my site was going to be crawled at around this time too, considering I had sent a fetch request for the googlebot.

I used my keyword ranking tool, and discovered that my homepage, and keywords I was targeting have all dropped off completely. They are nowhere to be found in the top 50 results... and I have no idea how to fix this. My site isn't spammy, has good content, and authoritative links.

Also, I don't have any penalties from Google, or spam links according to webmaster tools.

Thanks for any help guys.

Sometimes to much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

You have the word Pheromones on your home page 165 times or more.

Here's a cut and paste from google's best practices.

“Keyword stuffing” refers to the practice of loading a webpage with keywords in an attempt to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google’s search results. Filling pages with keywords results in a negative user experience, and can harm your site’s ranking. Focus on creating useful, information-rich content that uses keywords appropriately and in context.

Your site is not deindexed. Not ranking where you want it to is not the same as being deindexed.

Do this on google site:yourdomain.com if you see results then your site is still indexed, if not then that is what you are thinking "got de-indexed". Your keywords must be dancing for now..

Holy crap balls Mike! Thanks for that man! What a relief! I searched for my home page multiple times today and couldn't find a thing...

Kid Carson, I am not deliberately doing that. This is the static page wordpress comes up with on its own... how do I fix it? (If you would know )

    Thanks for the help guys

No, this isn't useless spam. What I meant was that I didn't bother using the "excerpt" function until later on in my wordpress site (because I didn't know how).

So every post was showing up in it's entirety on the home page (which would result in a ridiculous number of mentions of the word "pheromone")... it now only displays 500 words from each post, not to mention looks a whole lot better. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Just an update on what happened: I checked my rankings today, and noticed all my keywords are back! Some of them even jumped up a few spots from where they originally were.

Luckily, I logged everything I did. I'm not sure if it was what people call the "Google dance", but regardless, I did a few things in the mean time.

    - I used an automatic excerpt plugin and reduced all the pages to display only 500 words from each post on the homepage.

    - I reduced the number of posts showing on the homepage to just 7, instead of 10 (reduces the number of instances of my keyword).

    - Wrote an in depth article that doesn't use my main keyword so often (although it's still related, to again, lower the number of instances it's mentioned)

    - Removed the privacy policy, TOS, etc from the sidebar because it's already in the footer. They were unnecessary sitewide links.

    - Figured out how to set the meta-data for my home page (didn't know until now -.-)

    - Created a PDF freebie with links to my site, and uploaded to popular doc sharing sites. I then used some indexing tools on them. Not sure if this seo strategy still works (or worked ever)

    - "Fetched" and submitted links from google webmaster tools

    - resubmitted my sitemaps

    - pinged my site

Just a reference for anyone else who lands in this position. It can be a bit of a roller coaster!

An absolutely horrible backlink profile, that's the cause of the drop matched with the other advice in this thread.

You have quite a number of links from sources that can cause penalties, such as directory & PR submissions as well as forum links.

Frankly I'd be careful building more links like the ones you have and likely remove the directory links ASAP.

netanel23, how can I analyze my backlink profile? As far as I know, the only places I have submitted my website to are high PR respectable directories like JoeAnt, Jasmine, HotvsNot and a few other paid ones. They have a review process and don't accept spam. Are these still bad?

Some directories are ok. Take a look at them and decide whether or not you want a listing there. What other sites do they list? Are they crap sites?

Not all directories are bad but make sure you always look to build domain authority to kind of guard you from crappy links.

Remember that penguin gets refreshed so what seems to be working night just be a smoke screen. Always go for quality but nothing wrong with mixing in lower tier stuff just to mix it up.

I've taken a quick look with some free tools and see that a niche forum has 100 or so links to my site. That's weird, because it's just a profile link which isn't public. There is also some random ecig vaping site with a few links to mine... have no idea where that came from. I'll have to do some research on this topic, SEO is some brain racking stuff.

Edit: Just figured out where those random links came from - it's from a widget provided by ontoplist.com. I have a listing there, but there is also free inclusion but you have to use the widget which displays links to other sites... I'm not sure if this is good or bad at the moment.

That's either not doing any good or bad. Both cases don't help so I would remove that widget.

My content is fine - not spammy, and if anything it comes just a little under for the "optimal" keyword density according to my SEO plugin (yoast).

boxoun, I don't have the widget on my site, it's other websites that use the widget, and they have links to my website. I paid for a review+inclusion so I don't have to use the widget myself.

Also, good news. I found that my domain was registered 7 years ago!

I was referring to those widgets. You don't want links on widgets on random sites next to links pointing to ecigs and such.

When I said take down those widgets I meant those 3rd party inclusions.

Back link count is just 45, and that too is from some trusted site ! that's surely a clean profile I have seen.

Thanks promo87! I have taken care to avoid spammy/poor quality websites.

boxoun, to be completely honest, I highly doubt Google would take a few links from unrelated websites serious enough to penalize me for them. Some of my keywords have been dancing around 5+- spots today, but I'm focusing on building a few deep links tomorrow to see what happens. I think the unrelated links started coming in when I made a compilation post about a variety of different things (that included ecigs).

You said the site was down, that's most likely the problem.

The good news is, If the site had any type of authority it will most likely bounce back in the SERPs. I forgot to pay hosting once (lol), the site went offline, payed the host fee & the previously ranked pages all bounced back within a week.
