Hi,

This is my first post. Hello to all members of Warrior Forum.

How do pages get ranked in the top 3 if they keyword doesn't exist on their page?

For example if you type in the following keyword - how to stop fear and anxiety - in google you get the sites that are top ranked.

My question is how does it get ranked to the top of the actual keyword "how to stop fear and anxiety" doesn't exist on the page.

Maybe some of the words are?
I thought to rank high you need to have the words written in that exact order?

    You thought wrong.

    Google is smarter than that.

Google can understand what a page is about without an exact keyword being present.

Do a little research into LSI. You'll find your answers there.

In addition to what Mike said about LSI...

Looks like Google is piecing together the longtail from a bunch of internal pages relevant to the search phrase (how to stop fear and anxiety).

Here's the #1 ranked site for the OP keyword:
Combine that with the ranked page title:
    • 5 Sure-fire Ways to Overcome Fear and Anxiety Today

...and the 256 internal links that include the root keyword (fear and anxiety) as anchor-text:

...and they have a half way decent link profile from the 60 out of 22,000 links I looked at, I see at least 1 PR4 followed link with the anchor-text stop panic attacks. That same PR4 backlink page <title> includes the root keyword anxiety + panic attacks:
    • 25 Ways to Prevent and/or to Cope With Anxiety and Panic Attacks

The research I did was fast, I'm sure there's even more things similar to the list above.

Most times Google ignores keywords, so for Google:

how to stop fear and anxiety

will mean the keywords stop, fear, anxiety...

If there are some of the keywods in the page, it could be ranked... That's why if you have a good domain name and a good title page, you could rank higher for the EXACT keywods (how to stop fear and anxiety)

Google is better than that. It usually not only look for exact match but also the part-per-part keyword. If you have many "stop","fear",and "anxiety" keyword and links on your site (not only page) the you have more chance of being ranked by google.
