What consistitutes as Safe SEO?

Just more of a discussion thread.

My site is getting to a point where I would like to start building it's reputation and rankings. I know the popular way to do that these days is build backlinks, etc.

My problem is all of these updates like penguin and such. Also how so many people seem to know exactly what google, yahoo, etc want in their search engines. To make things better, their opinions usually wind up contradicting each other. Needless to say it's confusing.

So I decided to look up google's guidelines on SEO and use that as a starting point. While I was familiar with many points they mentioned, one thing that struck out was obtaining rankings by organic links. In addition, Google's also mentioned how the algorithms can spot unnatural linking as well.

I guess what I'm wondering is..would it still be wise to say take advantage of backlinking services if that could hurt in the long run? If so, what are some safe methods that I could/you employ to garner more ranking and authority on your site?

You want to be 99.9% safe? Write great content and reach out to the authority sites in your niche and ask them to share it with their readers.

At least that way you get 100% natural links.

No time to wait and too much work and no fortune to spend? Then hire someone like me, who builds artificial links, which is not 100% risk free but we hardly ever run into issue's.

In the worse case you would have to build a new site and rinse and repeat.

If you're trying to improve SEO and get backlinks, nothing is 100% safe. nik0 gave the route Google would like you to follow, and that's probably fairly safe.

Posting new articles that are your own and not spammy should be safe. Changing pages or site structures potentially not. You're not penalized for that, but it can affect your rankings.

What kind of backlinking services are you talking about? If it's WSOs or Fiverr gigs I'd be very cautious. If you're going with a reputable and long-running SEO agency it's probably going to be safer.
    Signature
Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

If you want to be perfectly safe, don't use any artificial link service. Go to relevant high PR sites and make links there. If you still want to use artificial backlink service then you may want to search for the high rank and experienced ones because they usually has enough tricks to make those links look natural.

This is and will be the problem of many SEO Professionals, the best things is "Better Safe Than Sorry", Google is kind enough that before hitting your site, he mailed you the warning email, and sometimes the measures to overcome it, and even if it hits your site and if after that you turned off the spam things, it will re-rank you.

Why i am saying this? Because, i want to say you can't be sure with SEO, the thing which is legit today, due to some of the "Bad SEO Practitioners", it may be spam tomorrow, then what to do?

My suggestion is that, do the things which you can do manually, a proper sign up and email verification, as if in future, it went spam, then you will be able to delete it by your own.
