Competitors hotlinking my PDFs

Did some research today and turns out a few of my competitors and product manufactures are hotlinking the product specification PDFs on my e-commerce website.

Is this something I should try to prevent, or would these links count as a backlink and have SEO benefit?

You would not have much SEO benefits of this. You should infact prevent the hotlinking. You can do this from your hosting account side. You should have an option for hotlink protection if you have a cpanel based hosting account

If you mean they're building links pointing at your PDFs, it's a backlink.

If it's a PDF that competition will never look at twice you could 301 redirect those backlinks to your money page URL to help rank your money page (free links + free niche traffic).
