Keyword inquote results big change

About a week ago, I was doing keyword research and found one with 2000+ monthly Google searches and Google inquote results of about 80,000. So I planned a site around that word and did all of the usual work - articles, etc. - to get it online. Today, however, I rechecked the Google inquote results, and the number has changed to about 170,000. Now that's a significant change - more than double the original. Is that sort of thing common, and what would explain that kind of change in just a week?

I am relatively new to this, BTW. All info will be greatly appreciated.

Checking the number of search results is a complete waste of time. It tells you absolutely nothing about the level of competition for a keyword. If someone told you otherwise, that person is a moron.

    So don't worry about it.

Okay, then what should one do instead? Thanks.

No matter what the keyword is, you really only have 3 competitors, the sites ranked #1, #2, and #3. That's it. If you can beat them, you will be fine. #4 through 800,000 don't matter one bit.

So, Mike, you're saying, then, that there's no difference between a million inquote results than a thousand or that one would be as easy to rank against as the other? As I said, I am a beginner and so should defer to experience, but I have to say that that seems somewhat counter-intuitive.

Anyway, I'm still curious as to how such a big change could happen in just a week. Either the Google results are not reliable, to say the least, or something else is going on. If anyone has a theory, I would be grateful to hear it.

WMT has never shown all the links, basically it's about as useless as tits on a boar.

Use 3rd party link checkers like AREFS and/or SEOspyglass to get a better idea about links. Also keep in mind no link checker will find 100% of any link profile. Keep in mind it takes time for 3rd party bots to crawl the web.

Also you need to verify your links are sticking If you don't own the backlink domains. I use Scrapebox for checking to see If my recently built links still exist.

A 2nd opinion whether your backlinks are sticking would be the Google Cache (text version) on the backlink page. Also (lol), a recent Google cache date on your backlink page is a good sign that Google bots are actively crawling the backlink page/s. Higher PR pages tend to get crawled more often.
