It's been about three years since I've truly concentrated on getting something to rank on the first page. I know that Google algorithm has changed a lot - just curious what you guys do to get pages ranked on Google anymore?

Thanks.

Nothings changed at all in the last 3 years.

Plain text and good links are still a winner.

Many links with quality content linking to your page with well researched keywords. As simple as that!

    Thanks guys for your input.

I really thought backlinking was dead. However, you are saying quality links - could you give me an example of "quality" links?

    Thanks again.

If I was selling property on Mars, a link from the NASA homepage would be quality.

If I was selling bicycles, a link from Tour de France 2014 homepage would be quality.

An example of this may be: a link on a Wikipedia page in your niche.

Of course not. And very few users actually go and open the links.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.

Getting links from other big players in your niche is a great way to start ranking.

Lots of content, and a huge social media presence helps as well. Once you combine all of these you will start to see huge results with many web pages ranking.

Avoid low pr backlinks, I personally like to try to get my links on sites in my niche because it boosts my serp rankings while sending me more targeted traffic.

Cool - thanks for the example Kevin. I imagine that would be very tough to get a link from major websites like that - but I see what you are saying.

Slin - thanks for your comment as well. I was using twitter to promote a certain political page off my website. I climbed to the first page (#3) and I never knew it until I was checking one day.

Congrats man sounds like you are doing just fine. Just keep up the good work, other things that have really helped my clients are interviews, a good interview with the leader of a niche can really be helpful.

Sometimes Twitter can help to promote people and ideas, and political candidates seem to be just about the optimal case. Twitter doesn't directly help SEO that much, but you can get "real" links from the people who follow you.

High quantities of varying anchor text backlinks from relevant, high quality (authoritative sites) are the only real way to always get you high up in SERPs without any worry of losing your ranking. (Google disavow tool if you have evil competitors )

PM me if you really want to know more.

Yes Alvinchua91, I agree that links from authoritative sites with varying anchor texts do help but many try to build such links by commenting on authoritative sites. I am not saying commenting isn't right but to rank high, if we guest post on those blogs with really good content that's valuable to the readers of that blog, then there's is high possibility that Google authorship rating will increase and our blog will start ranking highly.

Besides that, the use of outreach email to build some high quality links to some high quality content is also a good way. I have used this strategy of outreach emails and have been indeed successful in getting a handful of links.

Sometimes, the percentage is less, but 5 to 6 high quality links does stand out than hundreds of low quality links.

Yes that's right. Commenting randomly on 'quality' websites yields minimal results vs the same effort spent on for e.g. guest posting with truly quality content.

Yes, totally agreed. A small handful of very high quality, relevant backlinks from authority websites are MUCH more powerful Although I am sure many lazy people will violently argue with me and rather rely on some spammy software.

    The answer is quite simple:

    1. Finding great long tail keywords
    2. Write helpful content around it
    3. Natural and relevant backlinking

A majority of the same principles apply, it's just that quality is much more of a focus now than it was a few years ago (In terms of both links and content).

If you want to get a link from Wikipedia, you have to write a useful and informational content with graphs, useful pictures etc. and then link it from wikipedia external links section. Don't forget to mention the useful references.

Google actually hasn't changed much in the past 3 years, what has changed is their ability to catch people breaking the rules. H1 tags are very important and good quality links, not spam links. Also picking the right keywords helps.

Yes the algos have changed a lot, but the new animals - Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird etc. just want good content and good links. Nothing beats organic stuff. Create content for humans - not search engines and back links should look like you got them on the merit of your content alone.

Also, you need social footprints. If there's a lot of discussion on social sites about your content by people knowledgeable in your domain, your pages would rank really fast.

The SEO game has become more complicated.

It's not just about ranking webpages anymore. Other results are displayed as well.

    -- Videos
    -- Forum posts
    -- Google maps
-- HTML pages (this is what most people think about)
    -- Images

You need to know the competition level of your keywords for each of these possibilities. I would focus on Video to get good search engine positioning. There are many video course you can purchase.
