A very common format we use is putting 160X600 adblocks in the side bars and putting those large rectangular block sat the beginning of the page just beneath the article title.
You can increase your CTR by replacing the rectangular blocks with 160x600 blocks - yes 3 160X600 blocks. Now, build your content to match the layout so it doesn't look ugly. The benefit of this is the user can see the ad/ads even when he's finished reading the first couple of sentences and scrolled down.
This works especially well with sites offering info in small snippets such as addresses or listings of some kind.
And it isn't against advertiser TOS as long as you don't click your ads or try to add more than 3 blocks in a single page.
