SEO - Backlink Analysis Question

Hi,

I have a website that had a large drop in backlinks last year. Is there any way to analyse why that may have happened?

I ask this because I have a potential buyer who is concerned about this and wants to know why it dropped.

Any input on this would be appreciated.

Ken

You should already know the answer, If you built the links.

What types of links did you have?

The only type of backlinking I did was bookmarking and social sharing (Facebook and Twitter).

Those types of links aren't going to rank a page so you haven't lost anything as far as SEO.

That kind of social media never generate back links for your site. It is just increase link visibility and popularity on SE.

This could be a variety of factors. One thing that your potential buyer needs to understand is that it's not the quantity of links that matter, it's the quality of the link profile as a whole.

I'd rather have 1 link from a high PR/high PA/high DA authority site, than 1,000 links from social bookmarks.

Sites go down all the time, registration renewals lapse, backlinks are deleted by webmasters if they are perceived as "spam". Perhaps some have ended up on noindexed pages relegated to archives.

I've seen a lot of social bookmarking sites bite the bullet. Very few of them seem to last long in my observations. Unless you have a site where tons of people are continuously linking to it naturally (not as easy to achieve as it sounds especially in certain niches) eventually the number of links in the link profile will shrink.

I preferred ahrefs, analyze your website from it and take your next step. i agree with ketul, such links will never turn as back links,
