You know the answer. Directory links are actively being penalized. Just because the site that ranks well has some directory links doesn't mean that's the reason why. In fact it's only a matter of time till that site gets a penalty as well.

I totally disagree with your this statements. Directory submissions are not being penalized but if you made the 5+ PR backlinks from directory submissions website then it will never penalized your website but the thing is that the links must be relevant to your website.

Even if it was a good directory there's usually too many links on any category page for your link to get much juice. Many directories are generic and not niche-specific.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

No way, every spammers goes after these, it's the only links a spammer can get because they are automating crap content. Editorial approval is much better.

Always submit Your Website on High PR, Quality and Do-Follow Directory Sites. As mostly directory links Google treated it as Spammy links.

Remember "Always Quality Matters Not Quantity"

Make a list of potential directories to submit, then check their CF/TF (and perhaps DA/PA too), and submit to those with the highest numbers.
Also, if they are free, they are more likely to get spammed hard, and google hates that. Ignore free dirs. Paying 15$ for a good directory listing should work well!

If directories are so horrible then why do the homepage and subpages of paid web directories still show up in search results?

There is nothing wrong with directories. The problem is that the vast majority of directories are horrible and are webspam that Google should be trying to eradicate.

You can quickly find the top 10 or so paid quality directories that all require a fee to review your site. I have no problem paying for a review. Nothing is free. I've found they all work fine for me.

If you can find a well run, paid directory that only operates in your niche then that's one of the easiest ways to get a decent link. Sadly, they are extremely rare.

Gone are the days where you could submit your website to 1000s of link directories for SEO purpose. Ofcourse you can get listed on some popular directories like Dmoz, Yahoo etc. And not on other "just sprouted" directories. If you do it, then you are screwed.

No. Google is constantly monitoring directories and too many spammy directories are removed from Google index itself. But there are also so many good directories available throughout the web.

Submit to any directory after checking for following details. (some best practices)

Google Page rank need to be >=5
Check site:websitename in google search to find whether the website is deindexed from google or not
If you are experiencing any manual action penalty in your website, do check all your backlinks from spammy directories and disavow it

Yes it still have effect. But don't submit everywhere. Choose only web directories that are high PR ranked and that are good quality. Don't submit to directories that are poor, this will affect your site.

I would not bother to be honest. It is an old seo trick that worked many years ago in order to gain high quality links. There are better methods out there to gaining links. Think quality not quantity.

At present, Directory submissions with low PR websites are useless. But if you are doing with well-reputed websites like dmoz and all then it is best.

Only dmoz, Yahoo directory, and a few other more prestigious directories matter. But it's at a point where you can pretty much just avoid those. Getting into dmoz takes forever and is not really worth all that time and effort.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[9127666].message }}
  • I believe it all comes down to looking natural. If you submit your business into niche related directories and your overall backlink portfolio is balanced relative to types of backlinks (forum, blog, bookmark, web 2.0, video, etc), you cannot be guilty of any SEO sins. Natural is the mantra.

No you should not touch or place any link in any type of directory. It is being considered spam off page activity by Google.

If you try to place in Dmoz that will be very useful for the website.

    Thanks,
    Arpit

Here is what Matt Cutts says about paid directories:

Here is another older one where Matt Cutts specifically states that Yahoo Directory and BOTW are both fine:

What types of directories are seen as sources of paid links? - YouTube

As I mentioned earlier, the directory has to be a good one and there are very few good ones. It has to have quality guidelines and not just accept everyone that pays the review fee. You can easily find a list of the top 10 or so good paid directories. Just be prepared to spend a little money for the reviews and be prepared to be rejected if your site is garbage.

I will also add DMOZ as one directory that Google loves.
But for other directories, who knows? Time will only tell and to make your SEO work for the long haul, we should now stay away from directories because Google is actually actively penalizing lots of directories.
