Images and eCommerce SEO

Hi y'all,

I'm currently uploading products to an eCommerce store hosted on Shopify. Unfortunately, Shopify doesn't allow you to upload images in bulk, meaning I have to manually upload hundreds (and eventually thousands) of images one at a time.

I wanted to know if there would be an SEO penalty for uploading the images on a separate website and linking to them from each product page. Is there some benefit for having the images hosted on my own site's domain?

Would appreciate any input from you guys!

I'm too lazy to check it out now, but in the olden days, big websites had
different servers and domains for just about anything. They did that for
a variety of reasons that were inherent back then. I doubt if they do
it today, as servers are big and fast. It's a nonissue.

Well, check that. I just wanted to peruse amazon. Sure enough, looks
like some images are found on images-amazon.com

So, perhaps the big sites still use that principal. Obviously, there's no
    effect.

The only problem for you is to have to keep an eye on your domain.
If it goes down, no pictures.

I would double check shopify. They should have a way of bulk uploading.
They also might have a storage limit.

You will not have any SEO problem uploading your images to another image hosting website.
If you have your images hosted at your website of course is better ..

Why not get hosting from your domain provider? then reference them all on a csv file? That way google webmaster tools will index your images.

I believe shopify uses CDN which will stop google from indexing.

Thanks for the input, it's much appreciated!

Synthy: I'm not quite sure I get where what you're suggesting. My store is hosted on Shopify, and I'm not sure if I'm able to host it elsewhere in addition to Shopify's servers. Correct me if I'm wrong, here.

Just test it, can you post an image on your shopify pages from external URLs?

Are you trying to rank the images, If not then it doesn't matter what you do as long as the image shows on the sales page?

I host images on external domains & still rank those same images, so I know that's not an issue.

Thanks yukon, I think I'm starting to get it now.

I can post an image from external URLs. I just figured if I did that, that Google wouldn't index those images because they weren't on my site. I don't know if I'm aiming to rank for images really, but I figure it might add a boost in my rank if I have quality images on each page with keyword rich alt text.
