How do I evaluate keywords and have any idea if I can rank for them??
I found a niche I'm passionate about, and chose a "Buying" keyword phrase that includes a specific brand, it gets about 1300 local searches a month.

I used Long Tail Pro and for example I'll use "best dry dog food", the top 10 sites have less that 20 links for that phrase and 1 has 10 "Juice" links. But here is the kicker, the top 10 are Walmart, Amazon, Petco, Petsmart, ect BIG name stores but no other niche sites competing for that phrase.

Can I beat these "Monster" sites in a Google search for a certain keyword phrase or will they still hammer me because of the size of their site over all?

If I built a site focused on just the phrase with 30 articles including that phrase and got say 50 links PR2-3 and and say 20 "Juice" links PR4-5 would that beat the "Monster Sites" in Google?

You should be able to beat these "monster" sites with no problem. I've done it many times with a focused site and good backlinking strategy.

Yes you can. Using broken backlinks and outreach, you can probably find enough 404s to get backlinks.
