So that's the question. Should I just use free traffic methods for a sports website like this or should a try adwords or bing to automate my results.

If you want traffic on your site instantly use PPC or If you have patience till 3-6 months about your branding as well as traffic choose SEO because White Hat SEO is a long process and takes 3-6 months to ranked in an effective manner.

You could do a small test campaign on AdWords to see whether it makes sense in terms of ROI. Also try other traffic strategy:

    1) build your owner email list
    2) forum marketing - find exact conversations where people are talking about topics related to your site.
    3) social ads - it's cheaper than AdWords, but no converts as well as search traffic.

So you want to use Adwords for your site when you have monetized it with Adsense? You want to pay for clicks and get paid less?

    Cheers

There has to be some kind of a Goal before you start to pay for traffic. In your case it might be creating a community (new & repeat visitors), brand building (brand, domain searches) etc. Next, try assigning some sort of monetary value to these or new actions (like newsletter subscriptions, social media following).

Only then would a PPC Campaign would be a worthwhile investment. Just my 2 cents.
