SEO guys here!

It happened two times in a raw...when posting new content Google drops my site from page one to page two....then after a certain period of time the site climbs back up to page one....

Have you guys experienced something of that sort lately?
What the heck this could be about...Google tweaking their algo?
What are the best practices now?

Your input is highly appreciated!

Your new content is featured on the homepage and that is also the page that ranks for the terms that now dropped?

That could be the explanation, as your whole onpage SEO changes each time you publish something new.

If that's the case you can make it less jumpy by stickying some posts so that it isn't so dynamic.

This happens a lot, even on well established domains that's why I've been replacing my ranked home page positions with ranked internal pages that don't change on-page SEO (optimized plain text per page).

Hey guys, thanks so much for your insights!
Yes, it was posting updates on to the home page before the drop happened.
Now it starts to make sense to me...

What is the bottom line here - optimizing inner pages so they get ranked?
My initial goal was to keyword-optimize all the previously published pages -
is it a good idea in order to have the inner pages ranked higher in Google?

yup, happens to some of my sites too. not just in rankings but also adsense seems to fluctuate too. but everything goes back to normal after a day usually.

kinda weird though, i guess its what niko said since content on the homepage changes and it takes some time for google to adjust.

i wonder how this works with bigger sites though, those that posts lots of new articles in a single day.

I guess most of the traffic from big sites comes from inner pages, news sites rank for the news with their inner page, despite that its' featured on the homepage, at least in most cases.

  • You should add a blog section that only adds new content to your site leaving the rest of the content and on-site intact. That way, when Google crawls your site, it doesn't need to constantly re-evaluate your new ranking, only the ranking of the new blog post content.

well, this ups and downs keep going on with the Google, as you said after a while you climb up again to the top then I don't think there is any need to be as soon as you are in the.......

Yeah, I too have observed the same happening in my case. Whenever I publish a new post the number of visitors to my blog from next day on wards drops by 10-15% for few days. Then it recovers its position.
