Please Help - PPC/Adword campagin

I've been asked to come up with a list of keywords for a google adwords campaign. I have never done a google adwords campaign and I am working through picking out my keywords (using SpyFu).
1. How many words should someone who is new/unfamiliar start with? My list has a few thousand, but I know that's too many.
2. How should I evaluate the keywords on the list/determine what the best words to use are? (clicks per day, daily searches...something else?)
I pretty much feel like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
