High Traffic Site - What Would You Do?

Hello, Warriors. I'm a newbie to the AdSense/PPC world, and this is my first post to the forum, so please be gentle. I'm a web developer, and through using some of the search and aggregation tools I've developed to help clients in the past, I created an experimental website back in January that aggregates information from around the internet and presents it in a new, cohesive fashion. The information is all related to health and science research (nothing sketchy).

The amazing thing that has happened, is that Google seems to love the site, and is indexing it like crazy. Traffic is growing in leaps and bounds, and at this point the site is getting over 30K unique visitors a day, and growing by about 10% a week. I'm estimating the site will be at 1MM unique visitors a month in the next few weeks.

My question to all of you experts out there, is what would you do in my shoes? Are these numbers impressive, or nothing that great?

The audience is not extremely targeted and are coming in from very "long tail" scientific search keywords. I know targeted would be much better, but the audience does seem to be mostly educated researchers and scientist types.

I have put in some light adsense advertising, which is bringing in about $50/day, which is nice, but not enough to convince me that this is something to devote all of my resources to. I'm considering adding some light social networking functionality to increase the site value to customers, but am really not sure at this point.

Just looking for advice, questions, or your own personal experience. I really appreciate the time you have taken to read this, and I thank you in advance.

I would say that is quite impressive really. Have you considered selling your own ad space? You could also optimize your adsense ads / locations of them and maybe squeeze quite a bit more out of it.

Thank you for your response. I know this is a dumb question, but how would I go about selling my own advertising? Is there a site out there that helps manage the process and connect publishers and advertisers, or are we talking about reaching out to prospects myself?

Are the articles about a specific topic in the health industry? If so: are they looking for information or is there a buy-intention? If so, you could consider placing posts with affiliate-deals in them.

There is software that automatically will connect advertisers with spacing on your site. You could also start lean with a simple ad-placeholder with a link on it that will bring an advertiser in contact with you. That way you can get info on what an advertiser is trying to sell (and if it connected with your audience), but also what he's willing to pay.

Hi Edwindijkstra, thank you for your reply.

Visitors are coming to the site for information, and not a strong "buy intention". I know this is not ideal, but hoping to find something that would be of interest to them. Perhaps research services or something related to the information? Not sure yet.

            Hi Helio,

Im fairly new to the world of internet marketting however have finally had some success in it in building a website.

As someone thats managed to create an information based site and converted it to a product based site my advice is this:

You need to understand what your visitors are looking for - if its health related information - for what exactly? can you set up an affiliate page for relevant products or create informational product pages for whatever your visitors are searching for.

Also think about creating a premium product of your own in some form - perhaps a book with all the information they are seeking for a cost of £2.

If your getting over 30k visitors and even a quarter buys that per month your laughing in terms of income generation.

Think about aggregating email addresses and collecting them too - you can sign up for mail-chimp for free and then one-time visitors become repeat visitors that can lead to more value for your site (they can give reviews, engage in discussions and make the website seem more lively as well as come back for more products if happy with the previous one).

The potential is limitless - the hardest part is getting the traffic first and converting I've found is much easier and there is a science to it (a science into how people behave on a website).

My own website was my 4th attempt at doing an online business and I was about £400 down in losses. I made £5 one day and thought "ha, that will pay for my lunch tomorrow". The next day I made £10....then 0....then £15....then one day I made £20.

Thats when I got thinking - there is a market out there interested in what I was selling and it just needed a better sales pitch - constantly tweaking my website and asking myself "whats it missing, what would convince people to buy" led to numerous changes and the website has made over £10k in less than 4 months now. Sounds crazy I know and even im sitting here in disbelief of it all but its helped me understand how the process works better now.

I'm sure many of us would be keen for you to share your knowledge too on how you've created such huge traffic - one thing I've learn't is that the internet is big enough for everyone to succeed.

            Meph

Can you share the site? What is the domain name? Congrats on your traffic.

  • Welcome to the Warrior Forum and congratulations on your site! Those numbers are really quite impressive. Would you mind sharing what steps you took to get so much traffic within such a short period of time. This would make for a very interesting case study. I recommend signing up for a CPA network (Peerfly, Maxbounty, etc) and putting short form offers throughout your site. There's A LOT of money to be made with CPA!

Thank you everyone for the advice so far. It's getting late here in the EST time zone, but will see what else I can share tomorrow morning. Thank you and love hearing all of your reactions and experience!

    Hi,

Congrats on the traffic you're receiving!

You asked how you would sell advertising space directly, you can start by simply adding a page to your site offering it and seeing if you have any takers.

You might also want to add a 'Subscribe to Newsletter' option, as newsletters are a great way to keep visitors engaged and are good for repeat visits too.
