Considering how hardcore Google's been lately, do you guys think the old trick outlined below still works in 2014?

1) Find dropped domains in your niche

2) Filter domains based on backlinks and Domain Authority

3) Filter based on open domain

4) Register domains and use Wayback machine to RECREATE pages with backlinks.

Works great. Once the domain is rebuilt, the pagerank will often come back. You can sometimes get PR5+ domains this way.

If you cannot rebuild each page, then just make 1 page and 301 redirect all the old links to the homepage to send all the link juice there.

Then start linking to your web assets with diverse anchor text.

URL -> Brand keyword -> Target Keyword -> Longtail Keyword -> Brand + Target Keyword

Make each anchor text different to avoid a over optimization penalty. You can also monetize these domains because they often get traffic especially if it was a good resource in the past.

If you're interested, I can help you rebuild these domains because I've done it dozens of times. Send me a PM and I can help you out.

I wonder if the PR of a dropped domain comes back. Does it happen during the next PR update or any other time?

I would probably avoid it unless you are willing to contact the previous owner to purchase the content. They may be willing to let it go for ultra-cheap.

Try to assess whether the backlinks are likely to remain indefinitely/for a long time - if you see the link is on a news page that is clearly dated then it's unlikely ever to be removed. Similarly if the page says something like "last updated 12/10/08" then you can be fairly sure that the link will remain for a fair old time.
