Yes, getting dofollow back links are still worthwhile provided they are not spammy links, from bad neighborhoods, and guess what nofollow links also can help even they do not pass page rank to your site, even if they won't help your SEO campaign, they can help you build connections, partnerships, friends and take you to some pretty powerful dofollow links from people you least expect.

Here is the latest on what is going on with SEO, and a worthwhile for those interested in keeping up latest seo google algorithm changes and how it affects their current sites or future sites.

I prefer this article on the same subject covered by seobythesea Is This Really the Panda Patent?

I found this snippet from the article interesting:

"An independent link is where the source of the link and the target are determined to be independent of each other. The source group that a link is in, and the target group can be checked to see if they are independent of each other as well.

Determining that links from one group to another are not independent links can also involve determining that those groups of resources are likely to be related, such as owned, hosted or created by the same entity.

If the resources have similar or identical content, or images, or foratting, or CSS or so on, their similarity is another sign that the resources are not independent."

Wonder if there was some way to trade hosting so that I can host one of your sites on your host if you host one of mine so we can link to our other sites and have the links count. We probably have to have the domain DNS info private as well for this to work. How would this hosting trading work? With Host Gator if you have a reseller account you can set up a hosting for someone and give them their own cpanel. They would have to get hosting from another provider and do the same to you. A better solution would be an hosting company providing 10 shared servers with different IP's and allowing you to put your domains on any one of the servers. Does anyone do this? Is there another way to get different IPS for your sites without getting multiple hosting accounts?

I looked around and found hosting companies that have SEO hosting and give you several IPs. I'm going to look into that.

They talk a lot about down scaling the effect of links.

But I bet that they also look at the strength of the page where the brand mention comes from

Well, NO BIG DEAL, then we don't place hyper links at our PBN's but brand names in plain text. Less risk of being taken down as well.

Add a little script that searches the company name in Google and clicks on it, with a good simulation of human behavior and there you are.

Brand mentions are just as easy to manipulate as back links.

Did anyone actually read this article? It is total garbage.

All they did was track brand mentions for 4 weeks and then made up some BS links to brand mention ratio and try to correlate that to ranking position. It is one of the worst SEO studies I have ever seen. It is nothing but link bait, and you fell for it.

Let's say brand mentions do play a role in rankings, and even go one step further and buy into the links to brand mentions ratio... you would have to scour the entire internet and find all the brand mentions that exist to try to draw any conclusion from it. Just tracking new brand mentions for 4 weeks tells you nothing about how Google treats them.

MikeFreedman... you are absolutely right !

It appears to be a masterfully, designed link bait, based on a study, on so called mentions, but I will be keeping a close eye on how " mentions " play into seo ranking if it ever really does.
